IOLITE : See, iolite (aka cordierite) has this cool optical property oftrichroism, in that if you have a cube cut at the right angle relativeto the crystal structure, it will look like a different color fromeach of the orthogonal axes. In jewelry, it's usually oriented alongthe blue-violet axis; the other two can be yellowish, greyish, ornearly colorless, depending on the exact specimen. I've seen ithappen, since when I visited the Smithsonian gift shop outside thegems/minerals hall a year or two ago, they had some inky-dinky iolitecubes that I was tempted by, but wasn't sufficiently impressed bytheir size ( wrote in message...If this were my problem, the first person I'd ask would be Jon Singer. IOLITE : Most jewelry iolite cubes are smaller than 1cm. You need to talk to alapidary. There's a couple who sell at Minicon who do really nicelapidary work. IOLITE : Can anyone tell me about iolite? We have a customer interested in an18k ring with a 8 x 6 cab iolite, and wants to know more about it. Shemeans *magical* type positive attributes, I'm sure. It got us thinking - what can we say about it? Brian Adam - on RiscPC - You should really post that question to the good people in rec.gems.folk- lore, they know more about magical properties than us poor ignorants. But I can tell you this much: iolite is a fairly "recent" stone, meaning that it has not been considered a separate species for very long (this is nor- mal for gemstones - back in the good old days everything blue and trans- parent would be called Sapphire and every yellow stone was a Topaz, for example... I should have been a gemmologist then, much easier than today). This means that it has not acquired much of a reputation as a magic stone, either! It follows from this that it should have roughly similar properties as sapphire: good for making you happy, warding off evil, and protecting against poison, if memory serves me.
IOLITE : We can add a little more on iolite (though nothing magical): Iolite's name (also called cordierite or dichroite--even though it istrichroic), is derived from iosthe Greek word for violet, and commonly known as "water sapphire." Theextreme pleochroism (look through the iolite from different directions,one of which is transparent white) made it a practical stone to the Vikingnavigators. According to Consumer Guide to Colored Gemstones, by DavidFederman, "Believe it or not, iolite will do exactly what a camera'spolaroid filter will do: cancel 0out haze, mist and clouds to make thingsappear clearer. By observing the sky through iolite, Viking navigatorswere able to locate the exact position of the sun on overcast days....andthey found their iolite among other Viking haunts, Greenland and Norway."I tried it on a hazy day, and it surely does work fine!
