A su juicio, eso hará que se deteriore el área protegidade la Sierra de las Minas.Rodolfo Calzia Rodríguez, subdirector de Minería, subrayó que el artículo deThe New York Times se refiere a investigaciones arqueológicas efectuadas porcientíficos de la Universidad Rice, Texas, en el área de la Sierra de lasMinas."El estudio trata de demostrar exclusivamente el origen del jade azul que sedesarrolló en la época precolombina en las áreas de México y algunas partesde Sudamérica, ya que extrañamente los mayas no trabajaron ese mineral",explicó.Calzia considera que la investigación de esos científicos demostraría que elorigen de ese mineral es Guatemala, y que de aquí lo llevaron a otros lados.Las investigaciones de esa dependencia demuestran que tanto en la Sierra delas Minas como en ciertas áreas de Jalapa hay jade azul, pero en cantidadespequeñas, y hasta ahora no se ha detectado una veta madre.

There are apparently remnants of roads (and maybe mines?) in thearea, which I am sure will be of interest to arch/anthro's.I am not sure exactly what would constitute lack of integrity and respectwith regard to rocks untouched by human hands before, but I imagine it mightbe much more the province of those who will extract the rough and turn itinto cheap tourist trinkets (or fancy gems), whether mining engineers orlocal inhabitants, including Natives and descendants of those who mined thismaterial long ago for commercial use (remember, this source was not wherethe jadeite was used by Olmecs, so it was likely mined and traded by thosewho may or may not have had a special reverence for the material).
JADE : Just out of curiosity, what does everyone think about the articleposted in Spanish by Henry Benitez that says that the GuatamalanMinister of Energy and Mines put out a statement saying that there isno evidence of huge deposits of jade in Guatemala, and further notedthat the "discovery" was made by archaeologists, not geologists?I'll have to go back and read the Spanish article (pass the tequila to loosen my brain up a bit!) but in general geologists aren't that much interested in jade as it's not like finding oil, emeralds etc.; archaeologists notice it because it has to do with ancient human usages etc. Here in BC jade claims were overlooked in the first years of the colony by the professional engineers/scientists; it was the Chinese who noticed the stuff and started shipping it out en masse.....

But not until the discovery of jadeite rocks (jadeitites) in Guatemala in1954 was the Motagua River Valley recognized as a jade source exploited by theMaya. While abundant and accessible, the jade mined there today for thetourist trade, mainly between Estancia de La Virgen and Teculutan (Harlow,1994), is mostly opaque and dull-colored. It scarcely resembles thetranslucent and colorful "Olmec" blue-green jade found in Formative horizonsin Mexico. This qualitative disparity has led to a search for Olmec jadesources elsewhere in Mesoamerica. The Sierra de las Minas and the highlands south of the Motagua River haverecently yielded some remarkably-translucent, fine-grained jadeitites thatclosely resemble those worked in Formative times. Geological reconnaissance hasexpanded the known jade-bearing area at least six-fold. The first deposits examined are at an elevation of ~1,750 meters, 13kilometers north of the limits of detailed geological mapping, on Cerro BanderaPerdida (see FIGURE 1). An ancient, and possibly trade-route related,dry-stone trackway parallels the 1,700 meter contour for at least fourkilometers and leads to the mine area at Los Cedros. Alluvial jade was also found 8 kilometers further northwest at Finca SantaClara on the Rio Blanco near the intersection of Alta Verapaz and El Progreso. Another jade deposit was visited west of the town of Rio Hondo. These sourcesextend the described jade-bearing zone10 km north and 18 km east. Some 10 km south of the Motagua, alluvial jadeitite found in the Rio El Tamboris significant for its origin across a major fault, long considered thesouthern geological limit for jadeitite occurrence. In 1998 the floodwaters ofHurricane Mitch exposed much new jade which has been traced upriver into thedepartment of Jalapa, at elevations from 600 to 1,400 meters. In 2001 morejadeitites and related rocks were found in the quebradas of the Rio Jalapa andat an outcrop near La Ceiba, all lying in east-west running bands ofserpentinite. This southern band of the Guatemalan jade zone extends 18 kmsouth of the northern zone and has the same east-west extent
