BIRTHSTONE CHARMS : November is topaz. *I* have always heard that you *really* go by theastrological sign, but that jewelers just go by the month, not wanting to getinto the whole astrology business. So strictly speaking, as a Sagittarian Ishould go with whatever is usually called the December birthstone, which Iforget. But I have a whacking great big topaz ring that belonged to mygreat-aunt (also a November baby), and it's a lot of fun to wear to the operaor other flashy occasions.--HelenTraditionally it's Turquoise, but people don't think that it's "clear &pretty" so blue topaz is generally substituted in it's place.December is turquise, but the jewelry industry decided they couldmake more money off Blue Topaz, so they "changed" it. But really,it's turquise.Im a March Birthday and its Aquamarine. Personally I have always hated it:)

BIRTHSTONE CHARMS : I have a question regarding birthstone charms. Do you go by the birthmonth or the birth sign? Our daughter was born August 29, so would weget a peridot (the birthstone for August) or a sapphire (since she's aVirgo)? Sorry I'm confused here, but part of it has to do with the factthat my husband is also a Virgo (his birthday is September 13), and hisbirthstone is a sapphire.LisaMom to Jacob (10/26/94), Ian (3/6/97) and Emily (8/29/99)I have always heard that you go by the birth month. I am a July birthdayand my birthstone has always been a ruby. My DH is June and his is a pearl. My DS is February and I was told his was amethyst and my DD got lucky...herbirthday is in April which is diamond.*LOL* Its the same here. My sons birthday is Aug 28th, and mine is Sept17th. I selected sapphire for his birthstone. I go by zodiac sign.

BIRTHSTONE CHARMS : Well, since peridots don't have much of a *wow* factor -- maybe going theastrological route *is* a better suggestion :-).My daughter's birthday is Aug 1st. I use Peridot for her birthstone. It'sall a matter of personal preference.I've always gone by the month. I'm a Nov Scorpio so I have topaz orcitrine. Most birthstones have both a precious and semi-preciousalternative. My oldest is an August Leo, the second is a Sept. Virgo (sapphire),the third is a May Taurus (emerald), and the youngest is a JanAquarius. My oldest doesn't care for peridots, and never wears that shade ofgreen. My mother is a July Leo, and she has rubies, but rubies aretoo expensive. This year for Xmas, I gave most of my kids a Chinese year charactermug. I notice that the Chinese years also have stones associated withthem. The one for my oldest's BD is turquoise. Maybe that's analternative.

BIRTHSTONE CHARMS : It's not necessary to stick strictly to birthstones, except maybe foropals which are reputed to be bad luck for anyone not born in October.I've just acquired a new granddaughter, and she was born in October,so I now have someone to buy opals for.Your daughter must be a wonderful, loving, loyal, & creative person. My mother's birthday was August 29. My second daughter was born onLabor Day (that year) Sept. 6. Mom didn't really like the peridot, soshe wore what she liked. Our daughter uses sapphires. Mom sold gold& jewelry in general people went by the birthstone, but when it cameto charms most wanted their zodiac charm. Actually, I'd go with whatI liked and felt comfortable with. Don't let anyone sway you. It's amatter of personal preference. It's not a hard & fast tradition, notan area where you'll be breaking any rules. Jewelry is just a 'thing'to enjoy during our stay on this earth, so go with what you or yourfamily would most enjoy. I have some things I never would have boughtfor myself, but were given by Mom or Hubby & I always have fun wearingeverything.Happy Holidays, Judy

BIRTHSTONE CHARMS : I do plan to plant a rose bush or tree this fall in memory...but somethingweird happened today that took me by suprise. One of my friends who knewthat I was planning to do this and had asked me if I had picked out a treeor rose bush yet and I just started crying. It sounds like such a specialway to express your love and grief and I WILL do it, but I can't bringmyself to do it, yet. I have time, though. The best time to plant in myregion (Memphis,TN) is in the fall and that is still several months off. I am sure that I will be feeling more up to it by then. I have receivedso many encouraging words and analogies that I am already starting to feel"lighter".Has anyone else done something like plant a tree or something? I, and Iam sure others, would be interested in different ideas. My husband and I planted a lilac bush for each of the miscarriages. I also attended a bi-annual memeorial service at a hopital in Pittsburgh for those who lost their baby. In this service you can read a poem (which I did) or have someone else read one for you as a remembrance. They also give everyone a silk leaf that you can decorate as a memorial and as part of the service you place it on a tree. You can then take it home with you after the service if you want. There is also a candle that is lit and passed around where you can say the name and date of the miscarriage or just have a moment of silence. You are given a candle to take home with you also. I was wonderful and provided a way for me to grieve especially since I lost the babies very early in the pregnancy and there was not an actual funeral. There is an article in the June issue of SELF magazine about these memorial services at hospitals. Check it out if you get a chance.
