BREAST CANCER BRACELETS : Okay, Lori, yes that helps! Thank you for the recap. I guess I haven'tmissed anything, then. You did forget to mention that VINTAGE is supposedto be the upcoming rage if it is not already raging.Oh gads I forgot about that awful power bracelet stage. Before I stoppeddoing most all of my custom work I forced myself to do one or two of thoseuhg! And the stretchies ewwww!!! I've made a few. Tedious! But I did do abirthday party last year for three year olds that was fun! All "had" tohave two stretchie bracelets each in Easter colors!Fiberoptic...ohhhhh nooooo (gosh, no wonder I've been in a slump!!!) Wellit kind of grew on me as I helped a social worker organize a party for a fewgroups of women recovering from breast cancer. We all made those pinkbracelets with Miracle beads and crystal. I think they are on the shoppingsight. Do you know Bettina? Anyway, we made them and also made them forother breast cancer survivors. The social worker really enjoyed andappreciated it as it was one of the first thing this particular group didthat they actually enjoyed doing for a group outside of themselves (as I cancertainly imagine why!). One thing about that I learned - First bead classto a large group of women I'd never met? Ehhhhhh, I'm a natural! (bragbrag)
BREAST CANCER BRACELETS : I've taught classes in computing, and run into this all the time. I have noproblem interrupting the guilty ones and telling them that this is classtime, and that we have a break scheduled for "X." Any and all business canbe conducted at that time. Only once have I had people give me a hard timeabout it, and I invited them to do their business in the hall, and I'd tryto help them catch up later. As for the instructor leaving the class, well, that's inexcusable. You paidfor her time and expertise, and she had the responsibility to dedicate thattime and skill to her class. I have no problems telling "drop-ins" that Iam teaching a class, and am expected to finish in three hours, or can I callthem later. I hold classes in a place that does have a door, and Iinvariably put up a sign that says "Class in Session: Do Not Disturb." Inthe absence of a door, I'd put a chair in the entryway with the sign or evensome brightly colored yarn -- anything to make a boundary between my classand the outside world. BREAST CANCER BRACELETS : That's the instructor's fault. If there is one person who is not skilledenough to take the class, the instructor should take her aside and offer tomove her to another class. I know that some people sign up for classeswithout taking the prerequisites, but an announcement of what you hope toachieve in the class and that you need to keep to the schedule "for the sakeof fairness to all," lets laggards know that you aren't willing to teachbasic skills to someone signing up for an advanced class.Oooh, yeah! Be sure to include the Links List -- I share it at every class Itake.SoozFriends help you move; really good friends help you move the body. Now, THAT is a super idea! Thanks.Louise"Sooz" wrote in message...Thank you all so much for the good advice. You're really helping me with mypreparation. Any further suggestions will be appreciated also!Louise"Louise Smith" wrote in message... BREAST CANCER BRACELETS : I have been reading all the messages with helpful hints onhow to make the teaching process a happy experience for all.My bits of advice would be, BE PREPARED. Make a check list of all thethings you needfor the class and check them off as you put them in yourbasket/bag/containerof teaching materials. Do this ahead of time so that you are not trying torememberwhat you need 10 minutes before you head out the door.Make sure that you have the kits made (this is certainly the best as itensures that everyone has exactly what YOU want them to have and not whatTHEY think they need.) If you don't have kits, rest assured that there willbe at least one person who bought the wrong thing based on erroneous advicefrom a local shop. Allied with good instructions, your class will be off toa very good start. BREAST CANCER BRACELETS : Hint no 3. Watch your timing. Students take their tone from you. If youare friendly and business-like, your students will get on with the projectquite happily. Give an overview of the project and a quick run throughbefore going on to the serious demo. About 1/3 of the class will pick upfrom the quick run through or at least retain enough to be able to 'get it'fromyour first serious run through. The next third of the class will probablypick up on the serious run through + quick demo again. Make small groupscome up so that you can show them together. The final third of the classwill only pick up the technique from having you watch as they do. Make surethat you pace yourself so that you can finish your project in the allottedtime. If need be, give the class 30 minutes for each step, keeping theclass together as much as you can. There will invariably be someone who isway ahead and one or two way behind.
