BUDDHIST PRAYER BEADS : Thank you, Kaytee. If anyone needs to reference that again, it'll be in BeadNotes. You're a good friend. She is lucky to have you in her life.KathyH"S. B." wrote in message...Part of the course for achieving Reiki II level included a 14 daymeditation, using a bead to focus on each day, the stringing it.This resonates with me. I got started beading by creating a mala(Buddhist prayer beads) and discovering that the beading processitself was even more calming and centering than using the beads oncethe mala was done. Which isn't to say that using prayer beads isn'tcalming and centering in itself, just that I got lots of satisfactionout of creating. When it come to the question "How does this work?" I believe thatphysical artifacts that are infused with symbolism connected to one'sspiritual path can be amazingly potent. They kind of 'anchor' positivestates for you, and open the door to those states quickly because youhave associated them with the object(s). Kind of a positive form ofconditioning. Like feeling instantly secure when you smell somethingassociated with a happy time or a state of strength or contentment.

BUDDHIST PRAYER BEADS : Having found some information on Buddhist Prayer Beads on the InternetI still have many questions. The number of beads fluctuate, but most common is a number of 108beads. Some of the mala have divider beads while others have not. Isthere a reason for this number of 108 and why others have less? Most Mahayana buddhist sects seem to have prayers beads. I even cameacross zen prayer beads. Could you give information on the differentsects and their distinct mala?Different materials are used for the beads. Bodhi tree seeds, different kinds of wood, stones and even ivory (probably forbiddennow). What material could be considered typical or original? Is itjust a matter of taste and wealth? And the most important question I have is what is recited when usingthe prayer beads? I understood that in Tibetan buddhism they reciteomni padma... What do they recite in Chinese and Japanese sects? Itcan't be a complete sutra for every bead or can it?

BUDDHIST PRAYER BEADS : Related to this. Why is it used? To empty the mind? I read thatTibetan monks sometimes recite something, using the beads, for amillion ! times. Hence a counting mechanism attached to the mala forkeeping track. If you know of interesting websites or books on the subject I wouldlove to hear about them. From: ()Subject: Re: Buddhist prayer beads (mala/juzu) Newsgroups: Date: 1998/11/19 It occurs to me that I could also benefit from hearing some more responsesabout Bara's seven questions. BUDDHIST PRAYER BEADS : 7 -If you know of interesting websites or books on the subject I would love to hear about them.I think this goes back to Vedic religion... some sort of magic number ? 108 = 1 * 2^2 * 3^3 ??? I forget now.I think they're to keep track of sets (I may be mistaken about this asI'm an ex-Catholic, and I use the tassels like Catholics use theirdividers).Chinese - "(Namo) Amit'o Fuo" (Homage to Amitabha Buddha, the Buddha ofBoundless Light) "(Namo) Kuanyin Puza" (Homage to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva)Japanese - "(Namo) Amido Butzu" (Homage to Amitabha Buddha)Korean - "Namo Kannon Boza" (Homage to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva) "Ma-um" (Mind)These are the ones I know of / can think of at the moment. I've alsoseen entire sutras recited to beads... it's one bead PER SYLLABLE if Iremember correctly. In Chinese I've seen the Heart and Amitabha Sutrasrecited thus. Same goes probably for other ones as well.
