I forget now.I think they're to keep track of sets (I may be mistaken about this asI'm an ex-Catholic, and I use the tassels like Catholics use theirdividers).Chinese - "(Namo) Amit'o Fuo" (Homage to Amitabha Buddha, the Buddha ofBoundless Light) "(Namo) Kuanyin Puza" (Homage to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva)Japanese - "(Namo) Amido Butzu" (Homage to Amitabha Buddha)Korean - "Namo Kannon Boza" (Homage to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva) "Ma-um" (Mind)These are the ones I know of / can think of at the moment. I've alsoseen entire sutras recited to beads... it's one bead PER SYLLABLE if Iremember correctly. In Chinese I've seen the Heart and Amitabha Sutrasrecited thus. Same goes probably for other ones as well.
