BULK BEADS : I use a "bottle" that my father purchased for me at one of his fly fishing supply shops. Each little round "bottle" (they're about 1-1/2" wide by 1/2" deep has "male" screw threads around the top and "female" screw threads around the bottom below the base. You screw them together when you stack them and the base of one becomes the cover of the next one down. I put a little sticker on the side to indicate the bead number and color and voila! The best part about it is ... they're really inexpensive. (Mine was $1.50 for eight "bottles" and a top for the top bottle.)For storage - I broke down and bought the round things (six hookedtogether into one plastic unit). They have lift-off lids. Be carefulwith these. I usually open up all the colors I need when doing a row.If you have one compartment open and are rough opening another, thebeads can fly everywhere.
BULK BEADS : For small projects, I use a Bayer aspirin travel pack. You can buytravel sizes of Bayer aspirin in plastic containers - the drawer ofaspirin slides out. I have used this for many years and (knock wood)no accidents. When I am working beads, I put a bunch on the fabric I am working on.I use scroll frames or Q-snaps inside out (so that the bar is on topof the fabric). That way, if the beads slip, they don't go far.....I have these little bitty Rubbermaid containers that are goodfor beads. I think they hold 1/2 cup -- anyway, they're cylindricalwith curved edges on the bottom -- about 1 3/4 inches in diameterand 2 1/4 inches tall. The curved bottom edges make it easyto scoop up beads onto the needle, and since the container istransparent it's easy to see from the outside what you're doing. The lid, when you're not using it, snaps on securely -- it hassurvived being knocked off a table by a cat. (Of course, all thebeads made a terrible racket and another cat, who was sitting onmy lap, gave me a major scratch on the thigh in a frantic escape.Lovely little beasts ...) BULK BEADS : I got a catalog from the Book Mailer (seems somehow affiliated w/ Gary Lafontaine, or at least used to be). They offer tapered beads in bulk. Three sizes, four colors, at $7.75/hundred!!!!Haven't tried them, and have never purchased from these guys. Just thought that people have been looking for beads in bulk for so long, I'd pass along the info.Dan Bailey's has 100-packs of bead heads for $5.95. Almost all thebeads I now use were bought from them. Unfortunately, the DB web siteis not so good. Go to pages 14-16 in the Beads section. Not to go OT on roff but is there a chart of some sort that willsemi-accurately translate bead size to hook size?Tim wrote;>Not to go OT on roff but is there a chart of some sort that willI remember seeing something like that in an Orvis fly tying materials catalog. BULK BEADS : I've just gotten online and am also in the process of putting my little beadshop in South Dakota on a webpage (whew! this isn't beadin'!)I have a couple of questions of you folks who frequent the newsgroup. Doesit make sense for a small shop to put up a webpage, or do you only buy fromthe "big guys." I don't suppose I'd ever be able to compete with someplacelike Fire Mtn (nor would I want to), but I'm wondering if my small presenceonline might be worth the mighty effort.Second question. Someone recently told me about e-bay. Do any of you sellyour beadwork there? I love to make amulet purses, and I'm looking for moreoutlets.Nice to meet everyone, and I look forward to your postings!Bonnie--Dream Weaver Beads111 E. Illinois StSpearfish, SD 57783(605) 644-0288Personally I like to deal with the little guys. The smaller shops are morefriendly and sometimes have items that the bigger guys might forget about.I'd love to check your webpage!!! BULK BEADS : As Far as ebay is concerned, I haven't put anything on there, but I'veheard from others that it is a good outlet for things. All I can say is, give it try!!! Nothing ventured / nothing gained!I find that my web page brings in local and regional responses. SinceI don't have a retail store, that's not useful to me. But in yourcase, it might be. That seems to be the major benefit of havinga web page -- finding new local customers and keeping in touchwith current customers. (I use an e-mail newsletter for this purposetoo, and it is well worth my time.)I sell mala prayer beads, bulk beads, vintage beads, and jewelry oneBay. It is my main source of income. It is also a fulltime job! However, selling bulk beads on eBay is very easy; you pre-write theauction descriptions and pre-scan the pictures, and use them over andover again! I buy wholesale beads and mark them up to approximatelyretail, and sell them in "dutch" auctions. It is quite profitable, but also extremely labor intensive. Lots of packing, shipping, responding to e-mail, etc. It depends, I guess, on whether you haveenough "slow time" in your retail store to deal with those aspects ofeBay selling, and whether they are appealing to you.
