CARTIER WATCHES : I am about to buy a good watch and Cartier's Tank Francaise (goldw/leather strap) or Santos Dumont are my most probable choices.My question is that are Cartier watches good (within their price-range)? Or just average quality movements in pretty cases? (I reckonthat they do not make the movements themselves (?).)Most, if not all current models, of Cartier, are very fine watches. The onlydrawback is the fact that all Cartier watches have to be sent to Cartier forservice as there is no parts distribution, even to their dealers. I'm awatch repairman and yet I don't have a problem with Cartier on this policy.They made the watch, they can run their business any way they want to as faras I'm concerned.However, I get some pretty upset customers when I explain to them that theirlocal watch repairman whom they trust can't get the parts. So, if you haveno problem with that then Cartier is a good choice. Otherwise, it would begood to check out other brands too.
CARTIER WATCHES : I used to own a tank watch. Unfortunately I lost it, but it was indeeda very fine watch. It has afaik a jaeger-lecoultre movement. When I realisedit didn't keep time very well, I brought it back to my dealer. After twoweeks I got the watch back. It looked brand new. I've never seen this beforein repair history. I reckon they replace both back and crystal. It is a great watch if you like the design. Cartier apparently wants tokeep servicing in their headquarters. Maybe perfection is the reason.Thank you for valuable information! But I would still like to ask a fewthings...Was this watch with a mechanical movement (or quartz which replaced itrecently)?As far as movements are concerned, I am a bit uncertain that is it wiseto buy a watch with a mechanical one (such as Santos- Dumont) nowadays?I fear that the mechanism will eventually break down and cost a fortuneto replace (I am not an expert!). I would expect that quartz- movementsare more accurate (not a key issue for me, though) and last considerablylonger. Are these assumptions totally false?

I would reckon that back (18K) would cost a bit...My dealer here in Helsinki gave me the impression that they would orderthe parts (such as crystal) and install it here. And the same would gofor servicing...I shall ask this again.Well usually you don't replace a complete movement, but just a little partor two that are worn out. These things don't break down easily.Maybe some dealers have service authorization. I don't know about this.[BWhat's implicit in the limited parts availablity issue is that when as and ifyour watch needs service, expect to get ripped big time!Your second guess is hitting the nail on the head !!Pretty cases in average quality movt's .Although the movt's are exclusive to Cartier, they leave much to be desiredfor .

I've seen them for sale on Value Vision but I've never seen onewith an "appealing" price. The Cartier cpmpany has been providingservice on their wristwatches as long as anyone in the industry andthey will likely be there for the next hundred years as well. I'vereplaced batteries in many Cartier watches and it is quitestraightforward, but in large cities you could have Cartier themselvesdo the replacement for a reasonable cost. I've had friends whocommented on the very heavy weight of the gold Cartier watches but I amnot familiar with the steel or silver with gold plate versions. I don'tthink that I've ever heard one of my friends complain about any aspectof Cartier watch ownership which wasn't remedied quickly by the Cartierservice department (except the original cost). I've visited a Cartierfacility in Fribourg, Switzerland and the staff were friendly and veryknowledgeable. They did not hold watches made for their lower brand (LeMust de Cartier) in very high regard but even early models brandedCartir which were made by European Watch Co and/or Ebel are stillconsidered excellent pieces today. Cartier has been selling quartzwatches for quite a while and they will continue to supply batteries orswap in new quartz movements for any watch they've ever sold. All inall it's hard to fault their products if you like the styling and canafford them. Watchking
