CATS EYE BEADS : Okay, I'm going to try to sell some earrings to stores.The first product I'm trying to place is a series ofearrings which are very simple to make, can easily be madein quantity, and cost approximately $1.50 in materials. IfI sell them outright, I would like to settle on a slidingscale of prices based on quantity. I believe the "natural"price at retail would be around $10.00. So... would thelogical thing to do to be to price them at, say $5.00 for 1-5, $4.50 for 6-10, etc??? More? Less? Remember that there should be a top qty with no morediscounts after that. For your situation, maybe by dozens? With a top qty of 6 dozen (1/2 a gross)And I would start just a bit higher than the 50% mark - to discourage thosesmall orders. Maybe $6? (I'm assuming that your $10 retail assessment iscorrect)As far as consignment goes, most stores set the percentage they want. You tellthem what you want them to SELL for, then they take their % from that. Ratesrange from 25% to 50%. So at $10 retail and 25% commission, you would makemore than wholesale - if it sells. The benefit to wholesale is that, you don'tcare what happens later (well, you do, cos you won't get any repeat sales, butyou see what I mean)
CATS EYE BEADS : I've been making and selling beaded jewelry at local craft shows forseveral years now. I resisted it for a long time, but I finally brokedown and began to use stretch cord to make bracelets. I like theresults, but I'm not at all sure how to price them. I'm using acombination of glass, crystal, and/or metal beads - whatever I thinklooks pretty. I usually sell similar bracelets with clasps for around$5, but these just don't look like I could ask that much even thoughthere are just as many (if not more) beads, materials, and timeinvolved. Plus - at my last craft show my main competition in jewelrysold a gazillion stretch bracelets with plastic crystals at $1 each. Iknow the difference between that and what I'm doing, but will mycustomers? Any ideas?
CATS EYE BEADS : Hey Wil:I love Stretch Magic. I use it to do some different types of weaves onbracelets. Your customers will know the difference if you tell them whatthe differences are. Tell them that the cheaper bracelets are made fromcheaper beads, which happen to be plastic. Tell them that yours are glass,crystal, or metal, or whatever it is you happen to use. I myself use mostlyhematite, but all of it is either semi-precious or glass. I got rid of theplastic right away (except for what I make for my two-year-old daughter, shedoes not need glass, yet). I have no problem selling my stuff. There'slots of thinks you can do with the Stretch Magic. Plus, I just like the wayit lays, not stiff at all. Just experiment and you'll find all sorts ofstuff......Good luck!

That is why I resist doinganything that has appeared "mass market" already - altho some stuff is tempting- like those net-woven headbands you see at Walmart. I myself would stick tothe "real thing" and try selling where people are willing to pay for the realthing. The plastic stretch bracelet people probably were reselling importedstuff (or else making no money for labor) Try to find fairs that won't allowthis. I can do wire wrapping fairly well now, but even if I were speedy, this necklace (9 strands are recommended) seems really "labor- intensive" to me. How much would some of you charge for making it if you used FW pearls (fairly cheap these days), some crystals (not necessarily Swarovski), and sterling or gold-filled wire and chain? My gut reaction is that you'd have to charge an awful lot just for the labor, and I wonder if markets can bear that. Any thoughts? TIA! Susan in VA
