I'm not positive, but I think mantilla's were basically a largerectangle. (don't quote me on that, I'm not an expert on 'em. ) But if I'mright, umpteen rectangular lace shawl patterns would work greatt. Or no pattern- just a lace pattern stitch you liked. (I mean, how hard is it to knit arectangle? )Then find a lovely comb, drape your beautiful knitted lace over it, and voila.Hey, no pins, even! I mean, the weight of the mantilla is supposed to hold iton the comb anyway...and the mantilla comb has such long tines that it staysfirmly in your hair, which is put up in some sort of bun/twist, of course.Maybe your fiancee could find a comb in Albuquerque? It'd sure be different andinteresting, as well as gorgeous! Maybe a lot less fuss, too - both in knittingand the wearing. Unless you have short hair that won't hold a comb. Then theremight be a bit of a problem.

I could see it, but hadforgotten the name Years ago someone my mom knew went to Europe and whilethere visited Italy and Spain... when they came home they brought her ablack lace mantilla. The one they bought for her was in a triangular shapethough, not a rectangle. I'm sure either version or shape, done in laceand held with a beautiful comb would be gorgeous for a wedding veil... andwhat a lovely treasure to pass down from one generation to another! :o) I have only seen triangular mantillas, myself. They werevery often worn by women in Catholic churches here in theU.S., after women stopped wearing hats for other occasions(a real loss, if you ask me!). They were always worn withthe long side forward (going over the top of the head, thatis), but my mother came up with what I always considered aningenious variation that held hers in place without the needfor bobby pins (her hair's very shiny and veils tended toslide off): she put the point over her forehead, andfastened the edges to her clip earrings (women were stillwearing large clip earrings then and it was beforeear-piercing was quite as mainstream as it is today).A very elegant look.
