CLOTHING TONGUE RINGS : Abstract: Body piercing appears to be gaining in popularity andsocial acceptance. With the increase in the number of piercings, it is likely that health care providers maysee an increase in the complications resulting from these piercings. These may include the transmission of hepatitisviruses and bacteria at the time of the piercing or in the course of wound care. We review the infectiouscomplications that have resulted from body piercing and have been documented in the medical literature.Piercing is carried out by individuals who often have noformal training, in premises sometimes less than ideal. Advice givento clients following body piercing is often minimal, and atleast one local council has expressed concern for the risks posed(Ref. 10). Common sites for body piercing include the navel,nipples and genitals. Alarmingly, some piercing studios in the UK arewilling to carry out genital piercing on women although,under laws designed to prohibit female genital mutilation (Ref. 11),cutting, piercing or otherwise surgically modifying genitaliafor non-medical reasons is illegal in Britain. The piercing isperformed by use of a 'gun' as in ear piercing, or by insertion of asharp instrument which creates a puncture wound through which thepiercing jewellery-usually rings or barbell-like studs-can bedrawn. Effects and side effects Any skin break risks pain, bleeding,infection or scarring. Tattoos carry the additional risks ofallergic dermatitis or allergic granulomatous responses (Ref. 1).Cases of syphilis, tuberculosis and hepatitis B have beendocumented as being transmitted through tattooing (Ref. 12), althoughno cases of HIV or tetanus transmission have beendocumented. Other rare complications of tattooing include sarcoid-likegranulomas, malignant melanomas and basal cellcarcinomas at the tattoo site (Ref. 13,14).
CLOTHING TONGUE RINGS : 1997 September, BODY PIERCING FROM A PEDIATRICIAN'S POINT OF VIEW According to Michaela Grey, chair of the Association of ProfessionalPiercers, "the vast majority of piercers are total hacks!"While professional tattoo artists number in the thousands, hundreds ofthousands of tattoo kits are sold. With proper education,you should steer clear of unscrupulous dealers. Possible piercing complications can vary by body site. The most commonsites are the tongue, navel, ear, nose, nipple, lip andeyebrow. The genitals, chin cleft, knuckles and even the uvula (theflap of skin hanging in the back of your throat) are notexempt. One of the most popular and problematic sites is the navel. Itendures friction from clothing and belts, and moisturefrom elastic waistbands, Navel infections are difficult to treat. Somemay take months to heal. Tongue piercing, on the otherhand, takes only four weeks to heal. It is primitive tissue and healswell. The main problem with the tongue includes teethdamage from biting on jewelry, partial paralysis if the jewelrypierces the nerve, and extreme inflammation during the first fewdays after piercing.

Since a larger number ofour young adults and adolescents are getting bodypiercings performed the clinician should have some idea how to approach the complications that may arise. AnItalian study showed that pierced ears was an independentrisk factor for Hepatitis B infections. Similar studies in Washington and South Africa have had similar results. Body piercing and tattooing have been demonstrated as risk factors for acquisition of Hepatitis C.
CLOTHING TONGUE RINGS : Noninfectious complications of body piercing are common. These include metal-allergic dermatitis, imbedded jewelry, and lymphadenopathy which can occur with any piercing. Trauma from torn rings can occurat multiple body sites. Urethral and tongue rings have multiple reports of local tissue damage. Until recently in the west, body piercing at any siteother than the earlobe was uncommon. There is a longhistory of body piercing as rites of passage. Roman centurionshad their nipples pierced as a sign of loyalty to theemperor. The Mayans pierced their tongues for spiritualreasons and the Egyptian pharaohs had their navels pierced ina ceremony. Prince Albert, consort of Queen Victoria,had a penile piercing, which was the fashion among well dressed men of London of the time. It hassubsequently been named after him. So piercing has been a fad for centuries. We should be conscious of the infectiousand non-infectious entities we will see in our offices.We should encourage patients interested in piercings tomake sure that they have their procedure done with good aseptic technique with good aftercare. Exposedpiercings should heal in 3 to 8 weeks. Nipple piercing shouldheal in 8 to 16 weeks and navel rings may take up to 9months.
