NOTE - the following Rant is NOT ABOUT THE SELLER referenced in this thread --My problem with ebay sellers of this "Tibetan stuff" is the ability tovalidate the real quality before you buy it...Thelast piece I bought "looked great" in the photo - but when I got it --it was nothing but junk...the "silver" was silver washed aluminum, the coral and turquoise were glass...and the coral beads were... glass.Yeah - I could have returned it - but, they wouldn't refund postage- pluspostage to send it back ... (overseas) total would have been almost as what Ipaid really ticked me off too.....Warning -when they say "silver" - if they don't say STERLING-- it ain't!!!Mmuch of the "tibetan" silver...is NOT SILVER... but some strange base metal (that feels like aluminum) with asilver wash over it...

CORAL BEADS : What makes a good quality bead? Can things like plastic beads, buglebeads, rocialle beads and seed beads be used in quality pieces? Howabout glass beads? Polymer clay beads? Freshwater pearls? Can thesebe considered quality beads?The answer to this one is "everything is relative". The "better quality" atWalmart is not the same as the "better quality" at Bloomingdales! Plastic can be new and cheap, or vintage (or Bakelite!) and actually worth agood bit. Seed beads and bugles come in all sorts of quality levels - if youare doing something very structured and formal, you probably want the bestquality, to get consistency, for "freeform" things, you may be able to use alower quality.Some people only want "cultured" i.e. ocean pearls (South Sea ones, usually). Others are happy with real freshwater pearls, as opposed to glass imitations. And (MHO) the best polymer clay work rivals good lampwork in quality. Thisdoes NOT include dolphins or ying-yangs on pyschedelic backgrounds! ;-) If you are planning to sell your work, most of these decisions will becontrolled by the market you plan to target - if your selected audience canonly afford to spend $20 for a necklace, don't offer them 14KT gold.

Most of the time you willnever get back monetarily what you put in to a piece in time. That beingsaid, you can't expect to get a fair market price for good work with cheapplastic or glass beads in it. There is a big difference and most people willknow it by looking at it. There are all kind of cheap beads out there fromseed beads to 10 mm. but you really get what you pay for in the long run.There isn't anyone who loves a bargain as well as me, but when I am stoppedon the street by a complete stranger asking where did I get my necklace, youknow you are doing something right. Better yet, when I am stopped at a majorbead show by my peers and asked about a piece I did, it is a real honor.You don't get this response doing it with plastic beads.
CORAL BEADS : I started out many years ago by buying the glass beads in craft stores. Whata mistake that was. These beads, for the most part, are cheap made in Indiabeads, they are not a uniformed size or shape. If you really want to do nicework you have to use good beads. The Japanese beads are the best foruniformity and size, Czech beads are good for color but are not as good inuniformity and size as Japanese beads but better than craft store beads.Look at your work as if it will live longer than you will. It is a work ofart use only the best and in the long run it will hold up better and youwill not have people bringing it back to be redone because it fell apart.Use only flexwire not fishing line or tigertail.
