CRAFT HOUSE BEADS : Well, you see, Karen, this is actually pretty similar to what I have.We have a detatched garage, with doors for one car, so we walled off theother half for a shop. One window on the car side, three in the shop. Plusthe upstairs is used for storage. The shop is pretty much Pete's. When wefirst got serious, we had each been living alone quite a while and before hemoved in I wanted there to be a place I could ask him to go to give mespace. The only drawback is getting there when it's 20 below. Well thatand the country music he plays.Last spring I put all my things into a porch intended for summer use, whichis seperated from the rest of the house by a hallway/pantry/mechanical"room" ; (boiler, water pump, heater). But I really prefer that space as analone space.
CRAFT HOUSE BEADS : We have a U shaped living space. The kitchen/dining/living "room" is about24 x 20 and works for activities that involve being up and about. Cooking, entertaining, wrestling with the dog, etc. At the opposite end from theentry is a wide "hall" to the bedroom/office/TV/computer "room" (about 15 x20) has one end where our desks/desktops and computers are, and the bestchairs. The inside of that U contains the bathroom, mechanical space, backof closets and cuphoards. My only walls that aren't round logs. That "hall" is lined with bookcases on both sides, which may need to befilled with bead stuff. BARRISTER'S CASES are what would go well there. Acouple people have mentioned shelves they could enclose. Barrister(lawyer)'s cases are bookcases with glass doors. I guess I'll have to takemost of my books to the porch. And maybe I'll bring my beads in here. CRAFT HOUSE BEADS : From my desk, I can see out windows to the North and to the West, though notout the East, to the front of the house, though I can hear what's out thereand see into the living room part of the front room. I have room to work onmy desk top if I get rid of my papers. The TV is behind me, so I can listento that as Pete watches it.And because this really is just one big box, I can see or hear everything inthe house. This whole question came up for me because though I've seen beading rooms, Idon't know that I've ever seen people bead in them, except where equipmentlike torches, rolling mills, etc are used. This seems to be true even when people own their own homes and can makelight structural changes like moving walls. CRAFT HOUSE BEADS : I have to tell you about the most incredible series of events that happened recently:My MIL (Momz) is a counseller. She has a client called Theresa who she wanted me to meet. Now, usually, Momz clients are either gay, or they think they are fairies, so I had noidea why she wanted me to meet Theresa (I definitely have nothing against gays or fairiesthough!)So, Theres called, and it turns out Momz had told her that I have the silver beads andshe's a beader, she wanted tobuy some silver from me. So, we arranged a time for her tocome around to look at the beads. She bought some, and we got into a conversation aboutbeading, showing our work to each other. Then she dropped the bombshell! She said that she knows "this guy" who has a studio - he'sa glassblower and molder, but she had asked him to teach her to make beads. Well, mymouth just hit the floor and I could hardly summon up the strength to ask her, betweenshakes, if she would ask him if he wanted to teach me too! Theresa was ecstatic that Iwanted to learn too because she saw Marty as a "bit wierd" (on the lecherous side! LOL) CRAFT HOUSE BEADS : We arranged a time to meet at the studio, and Marty is the kind of person who just wantsto share his knowledge and pass on his craft, kind of thing. So, he showed us the basicswith a HotHead and some scrap glass (he used to make lab equipment, so I think it wasfairly hard glass, maybe Pyrex) - and we both got to play on the torch and get the feel of"how it all works".The studio is in a huge old 3 storey house that Marty is renovating. The owner has givenhim 2 years to renovate it and he does the work in exchange for using the house as studiospace. He basically has half of the first floor and there are a couple of ISU studentswho have studio space - one makes marbles, the other makes something else which I have noidea of as yet! (Theresa seems to think it's beads). Marty has made a couple of kilns forthem.
