DIAMOND NECKLACES : I have been thinking of this for a while and thought I'd through it out to seewhat kind of response I might get.I've been trying to figure out "special" things to do for each child as theycontinue to grow. Does anyone have anything they do that is "special" for eachchild. An example might be at birth buying them a "low end" diamond and then each yearupdating the diamond, then by the time the child is 18 or so, you can presenther with this diamond earing that has been continually updated throughout time.If you are Christian you could buy a pretty Christmas ornament each yearand then give them as a gift on the 18th or 21st birthdays. It hasbeen suggested previously that these ornaments be given as a wedding present, and those of us in the unmarried and over 30 crowd objectedstrenuously to the assumption that all children will marry. (Is thata subtle way of warning you about a potential flame war, or what?)
DIAMOND NECKLACES : My folks intended to do this with a pearl necklace (there are specialpearl necklaces that are designed for exactly this purpose). They neverremembered it (but I don't really care). This might be a kind of expensivehabit though, I suspect that trading in diamonds is more expensive thanjust buying one (only a gut feeling). Also if the child is allowedto wear the diamonds, they can get lost (my sister lost two diamondnecklaces--and a pair of diamond earrings :-( ). If the child is notallowed to wear them, then why not just pool the money and wait--I betit makes more financial sense. My family gives diamonds for special occaisions. I got a diamond necklacefor my high school graduation, diamond earrings for my 21st birthday, and a diamond dinner ring for my 25th birthday (it's an heirloom). Iwear them every single day (they're not *too* gaudy). When I see themthe remind me of my family. DIAMOND NECKLACES : Another possibility is to have a dinner ring made one diamond at a time. That way there is no question that the child couldn't wear it (after all,it isn't finished yet). There are some beautiful dinner rings avaiable, and I know that I just love mine. For example, mine has a central diamond, two medium sized ones at the side, and an arch of 6 diamonds over the top (there's room for more there--butall the stones have the antique cut and couldn't be matched). The central diamond could be given for the 21st birthday, andthe side diamonds could be given for the 16th and 18th birthdays. Then arches could be put on the top and bottom with 9 stones each (thesesmall stones aren't very expensive). It sounds gaudy, but it doesn'thave to be. Mine is very tasteful. I would not give a ring thisexpensive to anybody under the age of 21. The sister that I mentionedabove, got her diamonds at the same age that I got mine. :-( DIAMOND NECKLACES : Sorry that I can't be more helpful with boys--I come from a family of allgirls. Maybe you could build a car one piece at a time? Nah.From: ()Subject: Re: Traditions;ideas for kids.... Every ornament I have reminds me of a special Christmas!**************************************** ********* - Lonestar - **Internet: **UUCP: {ames, sun, apple, amdahl}!novell!mlinda **************************************** *********This custom has been a tradition in our family for generations. With myfemale cousins and my sisters, my grandmother gave us a place settingof sterling silver each year for our birthday. Then, when we truned 16,we each had service for 12, plus the serving pieces, etc. DIAMOND NECKLACES : The boys got cash. I think it was $100 for each year up to 16 (who canafford $1600 for 5 boys the last year...not me!)Now that we are all grown up, we all do the same things for our kids. Mybrother, who is not wealthy by any means, buys a complete set of baseballcards each year for his son. Ari now has 12 complete years of cards, andby the time he is an adult, they should be worth a lot. His daughtersget something handmade, like an embroidered table cloth, or something thatthey can cherish when they are older. For all of us, the symoblism is that we are creating gifts for our kidswhen they are adults, that they can cherish for their entire adult lives. The money was great (paid for grad school or medical school for every oneof the boys), but the things given to us by our grandparents definatelymean the most to us now that we are middle-aged.
