DRAPERY RINGS : For an outisde mount, the shade is attached to a mounting board whichis secured iwth screws or angle irons above the windows. Finished shadeis the same as the mounting board and covers the frame when lowered.Finished shade length equals distance from top of board to sill orapron. Use this method for windows of different sizes or out of squarewindows. You will need: decorator fabric, lining fabric, mounting board, screw eyesor pulleys, shade cord, l/2" plastic rings equal to the number of verticalrows multiplied by the number of horizontal rows, 3/8" weight rod, whiteglue, awning cleat, staple gun, drapery pull.Determine width and lenght of finished shade. Cut decorator fabric forshade 3" wider and 3" longer than finished shade. Cut lining withwidth equal to finished width of shade; length equal to finished lengthplus 3". Cut facing strip from lining fabric 5" wide; length equal to finished width of shade plus 2".
DRAPERY RINGS : 1)Sketch the shade to use as a guide for ring placements (step 7). Cutshade fabric; seam for width if necessary. If fabric ravels, finishside edges with zig zag stitch or liquid fray check2) Place fabric wrong side up on work surface. Mark finished width.Press l l/2" side hems.3) Place lining on shade fabric, wrong sides together. Slip lining underside hems. Smooth and press lining. Pin in place, slipstitch if desired.4) Center and pin facing strip on right side of shade, even with lower edge, with l" extending at teach side. Stitch l/2" from lower edge. Press towardwrong side of shade.5) Fold and press facing extensions to back of shade so they do not showon the right side. Fuse or stitch in place.6) Turn under raw edge of facing l l/2" of facing, turn under again3". Stitch along folded edge. Stitch again l" from first stitchingto form pocket for weight rod.7) Mark locations for rings with horizonyal and vertical rows of x'sFirst mark outside vertical rows l" from shade edges so rings holdside hems in place. Space vertical rows 8"-12" apart across shade. Positionbottom row just above the rod pocket. Space horizontal rows 5"-8" apart8) Pin through both layers of fabric at center of ring markings, with pinsparallel to bottom of shade. Fold shade in accordian pleats at pins toposition shade for maching or hand stitching of rings. You can use a ringtape instead of sewing all these rings on individually.9a) Attach rings by placing fold (pin in center) under presser foot withring next to fold. Set stitch length at 0, and zig zag at widest setting.Secure ring with 8 to 10 stitches, catching small amount of fold in each stitch. Lock stitches by adjusting needle to penetrate fabric in one place(width setting at 0) for 2 or 3 stitches9b) Tack rings by hand if zig zag stitch is not available. Use doublethread and secure with 4 or 5 stitches in one place, through both layers offabric. Reinforce all rings in bottom row with extra stitches as they willhold the weight of the fabric.10) Insert screw eyes on mounting board to line up with vertical rows; placeone screw eye above each row. On heavy or wide shades, use pulleys instead ofscrew eyes. 12) Tie a nonslip knot in bottom ring, Apply whit glue to knot and ends ofcord to prevent know fromslipping. Thread cord through the vertical riow ofrings.13) Mount shades and adjust cords iwth shade lowered so the tension on eachcord is equal. Thie cords in a knot just below screw eye. Braid cords andsecure at bottom with a knot or drapery pullCenter awning cleat on edge of window frame or on wall. Wind cord around cleatto secure shade postion when the shade is raised. DRAPERY RINGS : Brett and Karen Williams writes: Respected friend: ...You could send someone to Pennsic to buy them from me... US .40/dz for the "amber", "ivory" and "enamel"ones, US .60/dz for metals. Check the Site booklet for "Maison Rive". I mightbe in a slightly different place from the last few years(around the corner) but I might not. Alizaunde, Demoiselle de Bregeuf Una Wicca (That Pict) (Friend) Honour Horne-Jaruk, R.S.F. It makes more sense to take 10 hours making something well, than to take five hours doing it "fast" and fifteen hours fixing it. -Besides, the first way you have nothing to live down! While my suggestion is not absolutely authentic, the result isgorgeous--there is a woman based in AnTir thet makes a complete line ofdecorated hook-and eye fastenings (or you can just buy the eyes and lacethrough them), with late Renaissance patterns on them. They are fairlylarge, one inch to one and 1/2 inches, cast in jeweler's bronze or apewter-like metal. Her name is Anna the Lost, and you can either mail her aletter for a xeroxed sheet of styles at 2226H.Walker Valley Rd. Mt. Vernon,WA 98273,(include a SASE) or try to catch her at Pennsic, she's usually onthe merchant "road" that backs Currie Road. Mostly she does events in theSeattle/Everett area of the Northwest, but she comes out to Pennsic tovisit friends. She also has oak-leaf cloak fasteners and hooks and eyesdone in Anglo-Saxon and Irish interlace patterns. Hope this helps,--Ester du Bois DRAPERY RINGS : Hi,I tend to use the knitting spacing rings for these lacing rings. Theseare exactly the right size and shape and easily avilable from knittingstores and some crafts stores. They are plasic and therefore not"period". However if you are willing to use reasonable substitutes, these work wonderfully and are washable.UrsulaGo to your local drapery/decorating shop (it's better if you find a placethat makes the draperies themselves, although anyplace where they selldrapery hardware should have them). Ask them for brass tie-back rings. They are a gold color (sometimes they are made of a form of plastic, butare colored in gold metallic), small (about 3/8 of an inch in diameter)and completely closed (unlike the chain mail links). They should cost youa few pennies each. DRAPERY RINGS : You know, between us we could put together quite an interesting book of "hints and tips" for needleworkers. Anyone else interested in doing a book? We could start out as a shorter document in email format,, then if it gets really good and really big, maybe we could publish it?This stemmed from a discussion on how to keep silk floss neatly braided on drapery rings, and just sort of grew, when Robin suggested I use a plastic shower curtain ring that opens in place of the metal binder rings to store all the silk that is on drapery rings. What I see is a collection of hints and tips that just don't fit in the FAQ type document. Like using beads in place of French Knots, or braiding the silk on the drapery rings, and so forth. A sort of "Hints from Heloise" for needleworkers.
