ELGIN WATCH : Just wondering if anyone has the numbers and descriptions of Elgin watch movements. I have a size 18 Elgin National Watch Co., 15 jewel Serial # 24,188,895 with a very nice Illinois Watch Case Co. # 940,409 Nickel case. Both are in very nice shape. Could anyone look up the production lists and tell me what model this is likely to be? I realize these lists aren't always accurate. Thanks.Your movement is from the early '20s. I'm not aware of serial numberlists for cases, but if it shows wordings such as "Guaranteed 20 Years" orsuch, it's pre-1925 or so (if it's gold-filled). Cases are often a mixand match affair, so don't pay too much attention to dating them on commonitems.Additional info on the Elgin watch S/N 24,188,895. This is a Model 5,Grade 317, 18 size, nickel plates, pendant set, containing 15 jewels. Thiswas a popular Elgin grade, with a total of 188 production runs comprising261,500 movements. ELGIN WATCH : I have a large Elgin watch I'm trying to figure out what it was used for(besides telling the time).The face is white, although aged a little, has Arabic numerals, with whatmay have been luminous dots at the hours and what I would call "art deco"hands, also which may have been luminous at some stage.The face measures 6 cm in diameter, with the full body being 7cm in diameterThe case is brass with the words Defiance 1627903 stamped on the inside ofmechanism cover.The mechanism seemes to be of steel and brass construction, with the words Elgin Natl Watch Co.U.S.A.346711078 DaysThe crown is located at the bottom of the case and the I believe one of therear covers may be missing.I have checked the serial numbers against the Elgin data bases and can saythat this piece was a 1932 build, but the crux of the matter is, what was itused for ?
ELGIN WATCH : I have a watch that was part of my grandfathers estate. He was a watchrepairman and had numerous watches but this one is unique. it looks like apocket watch but is only the size of a quarter. It is an Elgin "Ramona", 20year double stock, 6/0. It has a chain that can be used to wear around thewrist. the serial number is in the 22,xxx,xxx range placing it approximatelyin the 1886 range. Is there anyone who can tell me more about this watch? Ramonawas a grade used by the Elgin Watch Case Co. (NOT the Elgin Watch Co.) toindicate a gold filled case that was warrenteed not to wear through to thebrass for 20 years of use. The 6/0 indicates the size watch movement that fitthe case. A 6/0 movement would have been worn by a woman as a wrist watch, orwith the wrist strap removed, either on a slide chain or by hanging it on achatelaine pin. Because they could be used as a wrist or as a pendant watchthey were called convertible cases. If the watch movement is an Elgin (thecase & watch companies were not related) and is in the 22,xxx,xxx range, thewatch was made about 1920. The serial # is 15551004Jim, Get some good books, or include the movement size and jewels.Jim,Your Elgin is an 18 size 15 jewel open face movement, made in late 1910. It isa model 5, grade 317. There is a fair amount of data on vintage pocket watchesavailable, one of the best basic books is 'The complete Guide to Watches', byCooksey Shugart and Richard E. Gilbert. A new edition is published annually,and it contains date lists by serial numbers for most American watches.Rou Ehrhardt has also published a number of excellent reference books. I don't know where you got your misinformation, but the only thingyou got right about that Elgin #15,551,004 was the year of manufacture.I'm basing my info on the Erhardt Elgin factory book. It is a grade 290, 16 size, 7 jewel, 3/4 plate,pendant set, nickel hunting case movement.
