EMERALD GEMSTONES : Emerald is a green beryl. Period. You are absolutely right here. But there are other green beryls too. Whether you consider them as being emeralds de- pends, among other things, on your nationality! As I understand it, not having been a GIA student myself, the American de- finition of Emerald is a beryl with a fairly strong green colour. Correct me if I am wrong, you Yanks! On the other hand, the British definition is a beryl coloured green by chrome. There are beryls showing green without containing a trace of chromium, they owe their colour to iron and would not be emeralds to an English gemmologist. Other schools teach other things, of course - there is no universal truth. And by the way, you can get green aquamarine, and you often call colourless beryl for Goshenite.

EMERALD GEMSTONES : Emerald is specifically beryl which owes its green color to chromium. Youcan also get a nice light green from iron, but this is not emerald. Thus, some beryl that is green cannot be called emerald. It's called simply green beryl. These stones are a light, low saturation green, more like agreen version of aquamarine in terms of darkness and color intensity, quite unlike the vivid and intense chromium greens of the finest emeralds. It's important to note that while most emeralds are a darker color, somelower quality emerald can overlap the color range of green beryls. Inthese stones, a spectroscope is required to seperate the two.Peter Rowe G.G.To complicate matters -- there are also some intense green beryls thatderive their color from vanadium (as does tsavorite). Some, includingmyself, would argue that these clearly deserve to be called emerald onthe basis of intense green color. Others insist that chromium must bethe source of the color. Whatever they are, they are certainly desirable.

EMERALD GEMSTONES : How about a Russian expedition finding *natural* strontium titanate in Mongolia? Of the many major differences between a created emerald (synthetic) and anatural emerald (genuine), chemical composition is not one. Rarity isnever an issue with created emeralds. They are plentiful and pricesusually range from $150 a carat and up. Gem qualities are also plentifulin synthetics and I have seen in my many years of trading more and moreretailers prefering the "easy" way out by supplying synthetics (with fulldisclosure of course) to their clientele. Aesthetically speaking, thesesynthetics can appear as beautiful as natural emeralds and therefore onemust always take precautions when buying a genuine stone. The advantages of buying a genuine emerald are fairly obvious; rarity, desirability, value to pass on to generations to come. Their cost howevercan be somewhat daunting as prices for fine material can be obscenelydear. Nevertheless, collectors from all walks of life have always puttheir hard earned dollars into the real thing and if you have the dollarsI urge you to do the same.

There are many ways to "manufacture" emeralds. As you know *nothing* :-) about gemstones, pray forgive me if I tell you something you already know! You can a) use another gemstone that looks like emerald, and pretend that it is.

EMERALD GEMSTONES : b) use some kind of glass or synthetic, and pretend that it is emerald. c) use a piece of beryl (an inexpensive relative to emerald) and coat it with emerald in a laboratory. d) take two pieces of colourless gemstones, or glass, and glue them to- gether with green glue - making it look like one whole emerald. If this is the case, you should insist on a geiger-counter check, as some of these "soudee emeralds" are dangerously radioactive. e) use a low-quality real emerald, full with inclusions and cracks and with a weak colour, and improve it by forcing (green or colourless) oil into the cracks thus making them nearly invisible. f) mix the chemical elements that makes up an emerald, and let these "grow" under controlled conditions in a lab, forming genuine-looking crystals. This is probably what you mean.
