GEMSTONE PENDANTS : Jim - I haven't been to a WBS recently, but my experience (and those of others I'vespoken to) is that this in NOT a place to stock up on standard findings andfirepolish. It is a good place to buy lampwork, vintage beads, or otherspecialty items. Expect quality and selection, but not bargains. Parking can be difficult but if you are interestedI can tell you where to park w/in walking distance for free! Especiallyif you are going on Saturday or Sunday. A show of course depends onwhat you are looking for. Last year there were lots of dichroic,lampwork and Czech pressed glass as well as many seed dealers. I lookout for the seeds as I do loom work and bead knitting. It's well worthyour time, I don't think you will be disappointed.Best regards, Debra
GEMSTONE PENDANTS : I went to both the NYC and Providence RI WBS last year.I expected WBS Providence to be a much bigger show than it was. It was mostlyglass beads. Some of the vintage glass beads were priced WAY out of line.There were several dichroic glass artists there, Paula Radke among them and itwas fun to actually get to talk to the artists and buy directly from them. Here are the vendors I can remember: Ava Motherwell (of course since she runsthe show), Sinaraja, Softflex, Art Gems, Zephyr Glass, David Christensen,Eclectia.. Art Gems had some beautiful gemstone beads, but their prices wereunbelieveable. They did have some fairly reasonably priced silver and gemstonependants. There was one dealer there with African trade beads and recycledglass beads made from Coke bottles. I took a class in wire working which Ava had advertised being taught by MarkLareau. When I got there, Elizabeth Knoodle taught the class instead. I wasextremely disappointed and thought the class was a total waste of my time. Icomplained to Ava but never got an answer. The WBS in NYC was wonderful - many more vendors, although there was a lot offinished jewelry for sale. Some seed beads, but mostly in the smaller sizes,lots of dichroic glass. MB Imports was there from Seattle with amazing gemstoneshaped beads at very reasonable prices.
GEMSTONE PENDANTS : I'm looking for a way to clean jewelry, particularly tarnished antique silver pieces (silver bracelets, silver and enamel chains, silver and gemstone pendants, etc.), safely and non-toxically, w/o using that paste-typestuff. ShakespeareThe sonic cleaners are good for cleaning dirt off things but I don't know about tarnish - I doubt that they would work. BTW I bought my wife a battery operated ultrasconic cleaner for $60 (Australian). It's not very powerful but it works well for home jewelry. If you do buy one _beware_ ALWAYS put things in a basket. If you rest objects so that they contact the bottom it can damage the internals. Our club destroyed one through ignorance. I found these beautiful gemstone pendantswhile Iwas looking for something else (the story of my life it seems! LOL). Anyhow,they are all very lovely, and have sterling silver findings. Most are fancyjasper, which comes in such awesome shades and patterns. You gotta take alook just for the sheer enjoyment of trying to imagine what each one couldrepresent.
