Newsgroups: Date: 1996/11/16 christel reeve wrote:This reminds me of a frugal magazine idea I've been using for years.I save all of my Christmas magazines and Gardening magazines. I put themaway in my office. I recycle them by hauling them out at the appropriatetime and reading them again year after year. Every year I add to mycollection by one or two. After a while, you notice that there are no new ideas in these mags, just new covers. This is the best. The absolute best. I could watch the birds for days.I hope this is a new one for ya'll. If you have a local figure skatingclub, see if they have a local competition. Often these competitions arefree to the public. They charge the _participants_ and not thespectators. Granted you may see a lot of what I call butt skating, butheaven for the skating junkie (like me). Many of these competitions aredays in length. Imagine, days of free entertainment!

GOLD ALPHABET CHARMS : Our number one choice: The Public library. For books, for videos, for story hour, for reference, for internetaccess, for a warm place to rest for a while with a good book, forpublic restrooms... heck except for food, the place has everything!Actually they had an open house to dedicate the new wing at our branchlibrary the other week and they had pretty good food, and drink, and aballoon wizard and live music.Someone, probably Colleen Porter, will probably jump all over me heresaying that the Library isn't free, we pay for it with our taxes....but that is a given... enjoy all it has to offer! In our city, and I assume most big cities, there are a lot of museums that are free, or only a buck or 2. Even the ones that cost 4-5 dollars are good, as we will spend all day in one, and it's very educational, too. We also have a chain of indoor play centers called Discovery Zone-it costs $4 to get my daughter in, and I feel much safer there than at a park, and we all get to play! Also, we have a very active downtown, usually not coming alive until dark, but still fun to walk around. T

GOLD ALPHABET CHARMS : And also, check with your public library. Many have free passes toarea museums.Isn't it a crying shame when your kids aren't safe at the park?DZ costs a lot more than that around here, and I find it (and Chuck Echeese) too commercial and dizzy-making. But I have to admit, the kidsdo enjoy them, and get a lot of exercize the times we have gone. Wedon't fo the token stuff (arcade games) just the climbing structures. So it makes for a not too expensive trip... although I make better andcheaper pizza than they do ;)The village in which we live essentially rolls up the sidewalk at about6 PM.... But walking through it during daylight hours is fun.Many/most/all museums have free days -- maybe once a month, maybe once ayear. Let your fingers do the walking...

GOLD ALPHABET CHARMS : Bev **************************************** ***********************"I drive entirely too fast to be worried about the food I eat." -- M. CarltonWe don't have a TV (not for frugal reasons; just don't like it); foractivities, my S.O. and I play games such as Memory, Yahtzee, etc.Found most of these at yard sales and have improvised missing piecesas needed. I also have a scrapbook (Woolworth's purchase) which I'vebeen keeping for the past 13 years; I paste in pictures I like, drawingsfrom friends and family, etc. It's a good way to chronicle life changes, too. Any big blank book would serve; you could make oneyourself. I also find sewing relaxing; I think it's one of thosefrugal skills that everyone should take a stab at (no pun intended).Of course, we take walks and trash-pick: frugal exercise. I re-wirethe lamps that I find (very easy to do; you can find directions atthe library) and haven't had to buy any floor or table lamps for ourapartment. I must also add my vote for the public library, because I'm alibrary student; you can find how-to books on the shelves or throughinterlibrary loan. Just ask a librarian!

GOLD ALPHABET CHARMS : In Boston, there are free summer concerts and holiday parades. Myfather, who lives in the suburbs, has been part of the local access cable channel; by law, cable companies here must provide a localchannel and access to cameras and other equipment for residents whowant to tape and edit local events. There is no cost to participate.I don't work, so I don't have much need to keep up-to-date on clothes, but there are times I like to dress better. I belong to a church and tothe Garden Club. The Garden Club particularly has many upper middleclass women who think nothing of buying $100 outfits. For instance, I found a pair of cotton slacks for 50 cents at a garagesale. They were cotton (which I love), a white pattern with a delft(sp?) blue flower pattern. The style was unflattering to me, but Ipicked them up anyway. I had a blue thermal shirt I picked up atWal-Mart the year before reduced to $5. I also had some blue leatherflats bought at a thrift store years ago. I wore the shirt out to coverwhat wasn't flattering about the pants. The pants had a large fabricbelt that I cut off. I used the fabric to make a matching barrette. (Study the barrettes at your local store). The barrette came in apackage from a craft store and was about 25 cents.
