GOLD PENDANTS : The basic procedure is very simple; you just have to make the model, the casting company creates the plaster mould. As you say, you make up your design in jewellers wax. You are not restricted to carving; you can weld with a soldering iron, melt some and pour it into a mould, drill it, texturise with anything you like, etc. etc.. You must also add the sprue the size of which is determined by the size of your pendant - its best to ask the casting company's advice on this.When you are happy with your wax, take it to the casters who will surround it with liquid investment plaster. After the plaster has set, they place it in a kiln to dry it out and melt the wax which runs out of the cavity left by the sprue. When they are satisfied that it is dry and hot enough, they melt the metal and pour it into the sprue hole, and, when it has cooled down they break the plaster away to reveal a metal version of your original wax pattern. You have to cut the metal sprue off and clean the casting up yourself usually. If you want another casting you have to provide another wax 'cos your original is now lost - that's why the process is called the lost wax process. If you need more than one casting of the original model, you should make it from something more robust than wax - you can use almost anything you like: epoxy resin, metal, clay, plaster etc.. The casting company then make a rubber mould from your model, from which they can form lots of wax images of the original model. Each wax is then processed as described above.
