HEMP BEADS : We started selling them too, and then we started to look for ways to jazzthem up, because kids would come by and ask us if we had anything lessugly. So we started scrounging around for other braiding techniques ormacrame techniques. I was the only one in the group who had any interestin crafts, but I wasn't making anything at that time. We bought cheap RITdyes and colored the twine, and ended up with horrible tangled masses ofknots in the bottom of our ruined pots, because we had no idea of what wewere doing. Beading hadn't really gotten big yet, but after a while westarted to look for beads to put on them. It was difficult to find beadsthat had large enough holes to work with the cord. We kept looking forsources and finally found a peruvian importer who was getting glass beadsthat looked good and that fit, and we eventually learned how to dyethe cord and make something better than an ugly three strand braid withknots at the ends. Even back in 90 these things were selling as fast aswe could make them. Whenever somebody called our offices and offered tovolunteer we would ask him if he knew how to braid or do macrame.

HEMP BEADS : Then in 91 I had a falling out with the group (long story, veryunpleasant, I spit on their memory (er, most of them, some of them weregood people and/or good friends)). After I broke off with them, I boughtmy first pack of polymer clay and thought how perfectly it would havesolved all of our fundraising problems. No need to worry about the sizeof the hole or about flaky suppliers. And then a year or so ago, I seekids all over the place wearing these chokers, and I feel like I inventedthem. (I didn't really, of course, I am the choker's aunt and not theirmother.) It seems to be separated from the political meaning. People stillcall them hemp chokers, but they are often made of nylon or other fibers,so the "hemp" part doesn't seem to be what's important anymore. The beadsusually do have that "head shop" look to them -- I cracked up when I readthat! -- so you can see it came out of the culture, but everyone is doingthem now.

HEMP BEADS : I'm trying to locate a place on the net that has some simpleinstructions for making necklaces and chokers out of hemp twine andbeads. I went an bought some twine and beads today, but they didn't haveany instructions left. Do any of you know where I can find some? Tom-- Ex Voto Corporation invites you to visit our websitefor a wide variety of fine art with updates often. We also have a listing of specific art / artists we aresearching for. HEMP BEADS : I'm curious why I haven't been able to find dyed hemp yarn (thread?).It's always the natural tan color. Is this just because I'm lookingin the wrong places? (Retail bead stores, mostly.) Is there atechnical reason why hemp is not dyed - eg, that it weakens thethread, etc?Has anyone tried dyeing hemp thread by hand? Is it successful? Cananyone recommend good dyes to use? From: ()Subject: Re: dyed hemp yarn Newsgroups: Date: 1997/02/18 J. Wermont wrote:Hemp yarns and threads have not been real available - although they are becoming more popular (I will not get into the silly politics and misconceptions of industrial hemp production, ok?)To the best of my knowledge the lack of color selection is more related to a lack of demand to justify the cost of such production.

HEMP BEADS : Hemp can be dyed using the same dyes and techniques used to dye any other plant fiber (cotton, flax/linen) Hemp is not subjected to the type of chemical processing that would "bleach" it to white, so you need to understand that you will not get the type of "pure" colors you would if using white cotton yarns. BUT they can be very very lovely. There is a mail list for dyers - a question there would likely get you more specific results. If you want more choice in terms of type of yarn/thread, try Ohio Hempery =- 1-800-buyhemp.If you want a really good contact in the US for dyes and dye info: Earth Guild in Ashville NC 1-800-327-8448Wheat who is presently working on finding an easier way to get beads into her handspun without losing the integrity of the yarn. Maybe hemp is the answer.
