IRISH JEWELRY : In "Rings for the Finger", which Dover has so kindly reprinted for us,it is stated that rings very similar to the Claddagh (Fede or FaithRings) have been used at least since the Classical era (Hands holdingeach other, hands holding heart, many others) and were VERY popularduring the middle ages as betrothal rings. I read a story on the web that a Margaret Joyce married a wealthySpanish merchant who traded with Galway. He died, leaving her aconsiderable fortune. Returning to Galway she used her fortune to buildbridges from Galway to Sligo, and re-married Oliver Og French, Major ofGalway 1596/7. She was rewarded for her good works and charity by aneagle who dropped the original Claddagh ring into her lap. We don't know that the Claddagh itself is OOP, we do know that it hasnot yet been documented early enough. The Irish are a conquered people, and there is not lots of documentation for us to work with...How manyIrish songs (i.e. words and tune) are there that can be DOCUMENTED pre1600? (heck, I'd even give you 1650 on that one!)

IRISH JEWELRY : I stand corrected. Hopefully, someone *will* be able to document the Claddagh, though mo Bantiarna and I will go on wearing ours regardless. :-)The authenticity police are really working overtime if they gripe aboutcladdagh rings. The V&A has a gimmal ring in its jewelry vault that ismade up of three thin bands which combined make two hands holding aheart. Looks a whole bunch like a claddagh. And a claddagh looks awhole heck of a lot more historically accurate than most comerciallyavailable jewelry (don'cha think?).As for that question about the brooch... it sounds like a type of ringbrooch. There was a type produced, at least in England, France, andmost probably Ireland inwhich the "ring" terminated at the top in apair of hands- they kinda look like they are praying (or like the handsat the end of the Ponds skin cream comercial, or the ones on the logofor the Chemical Manufactures of America)... Anyway they were ment tohold a stone. They show up in inventories from the 14th centuryaccording to R.W. Lightbown (Medieval European Jewellery). I can'ttell you about the gift end of it, could be true, could have been alatter day marketing ploy handed down as tradition.

IRISH JEWELRY : The "Past Times" catalog sells copies of the gimmal ring (the hands coverthe heart and then swing out to expose it), gold one goes for $125 and asilver version goes for $14.95 (1-800-621-6020). They also show a gold"fede" ring, called a roman betrothal ring, with two hands clasped at thewrist ($89.50).I have to agree with this definition. I have several pictures of Claddagh rings on our web site, so if you are interested look at them and we can see if they are what you are talking about.-------------------==== Posted via Deja News ====----------------------- Search, Read, Post to UsenetA claddagh may be different that what was described. The claddagh shows aheart (for love) held by two hands (for friendship) surmounted by a crown(for loyalty). The "loop with a bit dropping down" I've never heard of.

IRISH JEWELRY : I'm looking to buy a specific ring that I haven't seen in a long time. It's called a gimmal ring. It is made of three bands that areconnected at the bottom by a small pin. The top consists of twoholding hands that hide a heart. When the ring is not on a finger itcan swing open to reveal the heart. The only information I could find on the internet is an old newsgrouppost that I included below. "Past Times" has stopped selling thegimmal ring since then.If you know of any place where I can purchase a sterling silver versionof this type of ring, I would greatly appreciate it. I'm hoping togive it as an anniversary gift.Subject: Re: Irish jewelry HELP!Date: 11 Dec 1996 15:55:35 GMTThe "Past Times" catalog sells copies of the gimmal ring (the handscover the heart and then swing out to expose it), gold one goes for$125 and a silver version goes for $14.95 (1-800-621-6020).

IRISH JEWELRY : I would have to agree here, especially with the second point made. I am ahigh school teacher in an unbelievably devout Baptist town. Since I do nothave tenure at my school yet, I can be given a vote of "no confidence" byboard members, should they discover my faith, and I would not be given acontract to sign for the upcoming year. I have already had to pull my buttout of some pretty warm water in the past (a situation regarding my pride inmy Irish-Celtic heritage was questioned.....the school board seemed to thinkthat this behavior showed less pride in America than it should have.Basically, they called me a communist, though in not so blunt terms). I donot wish to add more fuel to their fire by wearing any articles that mightarouse any more suspicion than I already have on me. The closest I'll cometo wearing religious articles is wearing my Irish jewelry. I feel that theyremind me of my heritage (and, through that, my religion), yet won't besomething that will get me fired. I'd love to be able to be open about myfaith, but until the tenure system changes (and/or our society is educatedmore), I will have to be content dealing with it the way I am!Shield Ringer
