JEWELRY CUFF BRACELETS : As a supplier of supplies just like Rio, that fact that you've identifiedthe items you seek as "irregular" in shape and size, what (with all duerespect) makes you think that any manufacturer who supplies companies likeRio and Metalliferous (my store) is interested in tooling up to make dozensof different items that would not have a great deal of sales volumeassociated with them? And if they did do such a thing and produced in sterling, what leads you tobelieve that these items would be favorably priced? It is a fact of jewelrylife that if you seek to work with interesting and unusual things, youshould be rewarded for your creativity and drive. However, that also meansthat you can't buy off-the-shelf stock items that only require a shot ofepoxy and a quick polish to ready them for sale. Otherwise, everyone wouldbe doing it (thus decreasing the value of the items).
JEWELRY CUFF BRACELETS : I agree that it would be nice to have 4.5mm x 15.5mm oval bexel cupspre-attached to 1.5" wide cuff bracelets with rolled edges, but that justain't gonna happen. If you're looking to buy stock items, make sure yourstones are standard sizes. Try unusual groupings of the stones to simulatethe odd shapes you seek. (But now maybe you know why that lot ofnon-standard sized cabs was 65% off.......)I work in glass. Mostly dichroic (as does Glenn, I believe) and makingthem standard gemstone sizes is about like asking a bird to poop in aspecific spot. It just doesn't happen.I'm not necessarily looking for interesting and/or intricate work, justsomething besides the *one* bracelet and couple of pairs of earringsthat Rio Grande offers. The cabochons that I make are interesting &unusual. I don't need the silver to do that for me. But I would like tobe able to offer more than one style setting. With the limited selectionavailable from Rio I cannot do that. I have no choice but to use thesame bracelet that *every* other glass artist uses. JEWELRY CUFF BRACELETS : I don't want anything with bezel cups. Just a flat surface to glue myglass cabochons to. And apparently there is *some* kind of market forthese pieces. As I know at least 20 other glass artists (personally) whoare tripping over each other looking for something new to use. While I thank you for your lecture, it doesn't really apply to me. I'mjust looking for a nice silver piece of jewelry with a few flat surfacesto stick my glass pieces to.So, if anyone *does* know where I can find such a thing i would reallyappreciate it.Anyone with leads on where I can look can feel free to email mepersonally. On Mon, 19 Feb 2001 22:20:32 -0800, in rec.crafts.jewelry Melody wrote:Oh c'mon. David F. didn't insult you. His comment, after all, started with"with all due respect". wasn't an insult, just a lucid commentary. That isdidn't apply to your situation is simply due to the fact that you didn'tcompletely explain it. Had you done so, I'm sure he'd not have given you thelecture. And for the record, I'm not insulting you here either... (grin) JEWELRY CUFF BRACELETS : Agreed. I understand your problem. It occurs to me that one other aspect tothe problem that David didn't mention, and which perhaps you may not havethought of also, is that marketing a silver item on which one expects just toglue a stone, with no bezel or additional support, is marketing an item whichmay not give good satisfaction. The reason is simply that glue isn't all thatgood. A jewelry item gets banged around, silver gets flexed a bit, the ratesof thermal expansion between the silver and the glass differ, and many glueshave limited bond life. We like to expect our jewelry to last a long time, andstones or glass which is just glued onto the top of something is not going to dothat consistantly. What you need is a finding that allows you to adjust the metal to the "stone",yet which then allows mechanical holding of the piece, perhaps in addition tothe glue if you like. prongs are a common solution, as they can be made in waysthat the setting can be widely adjusted. Usually, the solutions are NOT thecommercially available ones, which are, as David pointed out, quitestandardized. JEWELRY CUFF BRACELETS : What I'm thinking here is that you need to up your standards in the jewelry justa bit. Perhaps, as you are already a glass artist, it's unreasonable to ask youto learn silversmithing too (though many have). But how about finding asilversmith with whom to collaborate? You could design the basic ideas of thework, then find a silversmith willing to produce the product. The end resultwould be far more unique, and though you'd spend more on the silver part, youcould mark that cost up in the selling price, and your end product, though morecostly than you're using now, would be sufficiently higher in quality to commanda higher price, and you might end up making more money per piece than you nowdo. And if done well, you could then pride yourself on selling jewelry that wasas uniques as the glass work you're mounting. Taking a fine piece of glass, which can be a valid and unique piece of fine art if you carry it that far, andthen glueing it on a cheap finding is a mismatch in quality that unfortunate. Iunderstand that, given what you can find in catalogs, you may not have felf youhad better choices (and thus your question in this newsgroup).
