JEWELRY EARRINGS : With all due respect - this a forum for jewelers and you had much better askfor advice in a dressmaking forum or something similar. We tend not to userhinestones and glue and would have little expereince with them.On Sun, 29 Sep 2002 08:50:03 -0700, in rec.crafts.jewelry "Tony" wrote:Oh, I don't know that for sure. While the traditional fine jewelers andmetalsmiths who make up much of the readership may be more familiar with goldand diamonds, the thing she's asking about is still within the realm of what thegeneral public perceives as jewelry, and still within the realm of what somejewelers have worked with, now and then... While I agree that such a requestmay not get a lot of response here, I'd hate to think we're chasing folks away'cause they're not working with quite our favorite materials... And more than afew of us have at least worked with resins and plastics, if not a lot of glue onrhinestones.

JEWELRY EARRINGS : As far as the question itself goes, while it would be easy to answer if I (ormost readers of the group) could see the item in question, it's difficult toanswer from the description alone. My guess would be that the thing is anacrylic plastic. Plexiglas isn't the only form one finds. Commercialmanufacturers can, and do, mold the stuff too, for example, and if this is anitem generally manufactured in any quantity, then a cast acrylic (not somethingyou can easily do in a home workshop, though) is a likely possibility of whatit's made of. For duplicating the item, I'd simply suggest doing as the postersurmised, hand fabricating the thing in commercially available acrylic sheet(plexiglass). it's easily worked. It's not the rhinestones that set my teeth on edge though... its's the glue!

But keep in mind that while with moststones, glue is a cop out, resulting in a possibly less secure and lessattractive product if it interferes with the optics of a stone, in the case offoilbacked glass rhinestones, they're INTENDED to be affixed with glue, and thedurability of glue is well matched to the expected lifespan of the rhinestone. It's a case of matching technologies to applications. In pave diamond setting, glue is not appropriate. With rhinestones on acrylic, it may be the best andmost applicable solution to the problem, not a cheap substitute at all, but theright way to make the thing. In that sitution, it shouldn't set your teeth onedge at all. Oh, and regarding teeth, if you've any crowns installed, ratherthan just fillings, keep in mind that without glue sealing them in, they'd notbe as secure, attractive, or permanent. (grin)

JEWELRY EARRINGS : Glues for rhinestones......best one should use rhinestones in a SETTING (whichcan be purchased at craft stores). However, when gluing 'stones' to backings, I use E6000 or GLOOP ... Gloop canbe purchased anyplace....Target, etc. E6000 at Michael's or JoAnn's....As for that shiney covering stuff.....might be ENVIROTEX or some sort of epoxyone mixes.....Peter, you are right.....sometimes experiments produce wonderful results. Without seeing exactly what you are talking about, it's hard to give muchsolid advice. My sugestion would be to experiment with materials that looksimiliar to what you have. Just some materials advice: plexi is easy to cut andpolish using tools you probably have around the house and wet/dry sandpaper forpolishing. Two part *clear* epoxys work well for glueing jewelry findings orrhinestones. Make sure both parts are clear and that they actually dry clear.Clear-cast plastic can sometimes be used as a coating or possibly even as yourbase. Hmmmmmmmmm that brings something to mind. You might be able to (usingclear-cast) pour the base three quarters full, let it dry. Then lay in yourrhinstones and pour in just enough to cover part of the base of the stones. Iwould think that this would give you a nice clean look without even having toglue your rhinestones.

JEWELRY EARRINGS : Thank you, kind folks. I shall continue to look for answers, and yoursuggestions about plexiglass material and the sealant are startingpoints. I'll look into the sewing groups, though I suspect I shall bethrown out of there, as well. I have quite a bit of experienceworking with rhinestones. It is the plexiglass/resin thing whichstumped me, as well as the type of sealant used. I plan on taking theitem with me to a couple of craft/art supplies stores, as well asIndustrial Plastics in New York, and see what advice I can get.Check out any of the costuming groups or try searching for folks that docostumes. I'm sure they would be happy to help. A lot of people who docostumes for different historical periods often have to come up withinnovative ways to fake different types of jewelry or have to come up withways to attach various types of fake stones/rhinestones to their outfits. There is help out there! Don't lose hope!--Mona
