The price of tanzaniteis entirely artificial, set by the producing industry. They seek to *create* amarket, but they can only do so on the retail side. (Well, actually, you couldsay the same thing about diamonds to a great degree. The deBeers consortium hassuccessfully resisted letting the supply-and-demand market set the price of gemquality diamonds for over 100 years. But at least there is a real andwell-established market, even if artificially inflated. Perhaps someday thetanzanite suppliers will succeed in doing the same thing, but I personally doubtit.)

If you get adecent deal on a $10,000 diamond, you can pretty easily get $5,000 out of it andshould be able to get $7-8,000 if you do some work. If you get tired of yourtanzanite, good luck selling it.Anyway, caveat emptor. A tanzanite purchase is like buying a tailored suit.Your money is spent, not invested. If you enjoy wearing it to the degree thatspending that amount of money is worth it to you, then it is a good buy. Theyare certainly pretty stones and make lovely jewelry.Bingo. Tanzanite is the latest fad stone. Buy it because it'spretty, because it's right up there with Enron as an investment.Ask the appraiser how much he'll give you, cash, for the stone.(If you've got to invest in gemstones, stick with diamonds of acarat or larger, and as high of quality as you can afford. Thebest stones hold their value much more than the more common ones.)
