JEWELRY NECKLACES FEMALE : No, that is what I meant, I showed compassion when it was warrantedand possible.... but the dangers are that it's VERY easy to fallvictim to a scheme that an inmate has cooked up. For example. If Iam working in the intake area...(which is where I was the last 14months at the prison) it is a requirement that I have the incominginmate (being processed from the county level into the state prisonsystem) remove their jewelry. All peircings, necklaces,rings...everything. Ok, they are allowed to have ONE ring. As longas it has no stones or design...basically a band. It seems SO heartbreaking when someone is made to remove weddingjewelry that they may have been wearing for 25 years...sometimes itwas not possible to remove the rings without cutting the backsides.That killed me since I cherish my wedding ring. BUT, there arereasons for that also. Number one is safety. If I feel sorry for thewoman coming in who is so shook up by having to take her ring off andmake an exeption, I would risk losing my job if she went to thehousing unit or into a holding cell with that ring on. Not because itis mere policy, but because there is a HUGE risk that goes with thatkind of thing. First off, she could be pretending ( I know it seemslike I go for the worst case scenerio, but it is a very sad reality)to be that upset in order to 'pull one over on me' and take that ringto be able to injure a female that might have come in from the countywith her or someone else. Secondly, her own safety...does she feel aneed to die for her jewelry? People get killed in prison, sad fact.We have a pretty low rate of violence at our institution so to speak,but it still doesn't mean that some woman in the quad with her won'tknow a way to get the ring to someone who she can bribe with it. It isn't that you lose compassion...it is more like you have it incheck. You realize the facts of where you are. You can't be scaredand work there, but you can NEVER FORGET where you are. That's enoughto keep your brain busy. And with the area I worked in, it was VERYhard some days. It IS a hard thing to do. It is harder when you AREN'T doing it, butthinking about it like I do lately. I think back on situations whereI would have to take a hospital run during an emergency. Life at riskand I am mad because I have to pull a double shift AGAIN because someother officer pouted their way out of it. Never know how you willreact to something until you are there. OF course I had compassionand showed it in ways I felt comfortable with, but being a femaleguard at a mens prison (the yard was male, the processing area wasfemale...they were shipped out fast, but had to start their medicalfile and state file there first) you learn really quick that it is TOOeasy to have someone fool you into thinking you could help or make adifference. If I had made the wrong choices at the wrong times, notonly would my job be in jeopardy, but my freedom too. Inmates cancome up with some convincing stuff...they have all the time in theworld to think of it. So I guess more caution than compassion isreally the best way to sum it up....always easier to take the hardroad and KNOW your consequences, than to fall to the low road and take
