LOOSE GEMSTONES : I'm selling these 2 specimens from my gemstone collection because I recentlyacquired a larger one.They are beautiful stones, each weighing in at around 2 carats, andmeasuring 9x7mm with an oval cabochon cut. Star diopside are known as theStar of India because the overwhelming majority of these stones are found inIndia. They have not been enhanced in any way.Here's a photo of one of the stones. The other stone is identical to thisone.It has some dust on it. I didn't realize until I had taken the picture andput the camera away. The bright spot on it is where the camera flash hitit.The cut is cabochon, which is typical for any stone exhibiting the star orcat's eye effect. When you look at this stone in daylight or under directincandescence, you can see a 4 pointed star which seems to be floating onthe surface of the stone. When you change the angle of the stone inrelation to the light the star seems to dance around on the surface. Thisis a jet black stone, not to be confused with black star sapphire. Blackstar sapphire has a different Moh's hardness and composition, as well as asix pointed star.
LOOSE GEMSTONES : Like I said, I'm trying to make room in my gem collection, so whoever wantsone stone can have it for 4 dollars. I have two, so if you want both youcan have them both for 6 dollars.or read this:Diopside occurs in somewhat stocky or elongated prismatic crystals, or asaggragates of rod shaped crystals,the color often being being bottle green,through yellow green, to blackish green, but occasionally a bright green. Insome cases it is semi-opaque, with internal fibrosity. It has a specificgravity of approximately 3.3, and a hardness of 5.6 - 6.0, displays strongbirefringence, and has a vitreous luster. The test streak is white. Thetransparent types are used as gemstones. Material from India containsfibers, which gives the cut and polished stone asterism. When this occurs,it is called a Star Diopside. Star Diopside has only binary symmetry, andthe star has four rays, rather than six, like other star stones. The fourrays, two of which are straight, while the other two, not at right angles tothe first pair, look slightly wavy. Also, one axis has a thinner line thanthe other. Some Diopside from Italy, contains metallic Manganese ions, andcolors the opaque mineral purple, and it is called Violane. Sometimesmetallic Chromium ions are part of the atomic structure, and color themineral a beautiful vivid green. When Chrome is present in Beryl crystals,it colors them green also, and they are called Emeralds. When this happensto Diopside, it is called appropriately, Chrome Diopside. The transparentChrome Diopside crystals are very pretty, and make beautiful gemstones whencut and polished, looking much like an emerald. This variety of Diopsideoccures mostly in Russia. Unless you are very familiar with gemstones (grading and ID), I would advise against it. I assume also that the reason you want the names of reputable dealers is so you don't get ripped off. Again, if you know stones, you won't get ripped off as easy by even a shady dealer, but the advise still is to forget the quick buck. Been there and done that! Gordon
LOOSE GEMSTONES : Actually this note is on behalf of my (newsgroup-challenged) wife who isa jeweller and does know the value of gemstones. But we are bothunfamiliar with Rio dealers, and are therefore looking for insights andadvice from someone who's successfully "Been there and done that!" Marc L stated you would be better off if you went to someplace like Teofilo Otoni and I agree completely. I was there several (4) years ago and was like a kid in a candy store. Put on your dickering shoes and have fun with some really great people. GordonI now go to Brazil once a month to buy,and have lived there for periodsas long as 3 years.I deal in Rough Stones only but am well aquaintedwith the cut business there also.You can expect to pay in Rio evenhigher prices than you might pay in New York for cut gemstones.It willbe difficult to find wholesalers of such goods there.It is a Touristarea and visitors thinking they are buying source prices will pay quitehigh to say they bought the stone at the source in Rio.There are nomining operations in Rio de Janeiro.If you want to buy well,and even youcan buy in only small quantities,even select.You must travel up near themining sites in Minas Gerias.There are specialty areas where it is bestto go for a specific stone.Such as Nova Era for Emerald,or Ouro Pretofor Precious Topaz.(Or even Belo Hroizonte for this Topaz as it is thenearest large Gem center).There are 3 general buying areas in Minas.BeloHorizonte would be the most expensive,but most easily accesable and amodern and safe large metropoliten area.There are even direct airflights U.S. to Belo. But for the best prices you would go up to Teflo Otoni or GovenadorValadares.In both these small cities are areas several blocks long wheresmall miners,brokers and lapidaries mill about in the street dailey tosell their wares.You will sacrifice the comforts of Rio,and one mustexercise comon sense or problems will arise,but there you will findbargins galore.And most of the lots offered on the street are small andmany sellers are willing to allow selection.Even if you are seekinglarge lots of cut stones,you will pay a bit more but in both thesecities are offices with professional firms who will sell you at aprofessional price. I could go on and write a book about this,but I will add only youwill find English language vary rare there and you had better know yourbusiness because fakes abound.And exercise caution.The police arecorrupt(or more so than Rio)There are no U.S. or European Consulatesthere.Boa Sorte!
