MAKING BEAD BRACELETS : Today I turned 44. I did the only thing that should be done on such a day. Iwent to the mall. Headed straight to the cosmetics counter. Had Estee Lauderwithin sight when I was diverted by shiny objects that I would just have tocheck out. Power Bead bracelets. Had read all about them here on alt.fashion. Had even seen a few people wearing them recently. But never had I been able tosee one up close and personal. Quite interesting. Those power beads. Tootrendy for my tastes though. I'm not sure I'm so keen on the idea of limitingmyself to just the powers-- that said bead attracts. I want to have what Ineed, when I need it, and hopefully every once and a while, the what and thewhen shall meet. I guess I'm saying that I'd like to keep all of my optionsopen. While standing with my options open, I experienced a terrific flashbackto the summer of '69. There before my eyes were delicate little colorful glassbead bracelets. There was only one set of 12 bracelets. My set! Theyliterally could have been my set. I spent the summer of 1969 making theselittle glass bead bracelets and necklaces for everyone I knew. Thirty yearslater, and they're back again. Carly Simon said it well when she sang "It'scomin' around again."
MAKING BEAD BRACELETS : I love my glass bead bracelets. I think I'll even sleep in them tonight. So,all of you people out there who are soon to have a birthday and become one yearolder, do know this--each day holds it's own tiny treasures. These treasuresare always hidden. Fortunately, hidden in plain sight. Lest we search so hard,we'd never find them. Sometimes amidst the chaos of living, the treasures arehard to believe in. Sometimes though when we least expect it, we're on our wayto the makeup counter, and along the way we are transported through timesportal to a long ago memory. And you feel, even if for a fleeting moment, joy. Joy in remembering the way things used to be. Joy in remembering the friendsthat I made these bracelets for in the summer of '69. Joy in just being alive. I really had a wonderful birthday.
