MALA BEADS : I was reading in *The History of Beads* abour Worry beads-----------33 beadswith a vase shaped retaining bead ending in a tasselWhat is a retaining bead? Has anyone seen a picture of Worry Beads on a website anywhere? I'd like to see exactly what they mean.Worry beads are very similar to a Catholic rosary in appearance. Think of the*retaining* bead as the medallion at the bottom of a rosary from which the thecrucifix hangs. Instead of beads and a crucifix, worry beads have a tasselwhich hangs off the bottom of the vessel-shaped *retaining* bead. These are auctioned on EBay all the time. Unfortunately, EBay is downright now, and I can't give you the URL for an example. The ones thatI have seen have been large smooth beads loosely strung on a thinchain or strand of floss. You move the beads along the chain. At thebottom of the chain is a bead that looks like a pendulum. It is theonly bead that is fixed in position and does not move. Many Greektourism companies (such as airlines and cruise lines) give them awayto customers and travel agents, and these are the type most oftenauctioned on EBay.

MALA BEADS : The nearest equivalent is probably the Buddhist/Hindu mala beads, which I sometimes make for auction on EBay. In the case of malabeads, they are usually some fraction of 108 beads, and they arestrung more tightly around the chain. Mala beads also have a focalbead at the "end" of the round of repetitions, but the beads areusually not mobile and have spacers between the beads so that theyflow smoothly between the fingers. They sometimes have a tassel, andsometimes not.I don't know if the worry beads have prayers repeated on each bead.I'm presuming that they must, though it may also be calming just tomanipulate the beads. From: ()Subject: Re: worry beads Newsgroups: Date: 1999/08/09 Thanks Carol and Kathleen, I was wondering if they were worn like a necklace or just on a strandthat one carries in a pocket or something. I will check ebay to see if Ican see some. Great idea.

MALA BEADS : The strand of worry beads that I have isn't long enough to fit over my head, but it you were thinking of making them to be worn, there isn't any reason youcouldn't space the beads out according. I think they were originally meant tobe carried by men who often kept them in their pockets when they weren'tfondling them. :-)Worry beads tend to be pocket pieces. They are strung too loosely towear as jewelry. Mala beads (the Hindu or Buddhist equivalent) aremost often made into necklaces (if they are54 or 108 beads) orbracelets (if they are 27 or 36 beads).I don't want to spam the newsgroup by selling my own stuff, butanother EBay mala maker that I really admire is Goldhawk. You couldlook her up on EBay for examples of mala prayer beads.

MALA BEADS : Can some one tell me the correct way to pronounce "Mala" as in Mala Beads?Sure! Say "Ma" like "HEY MA"!!!, and say "La" like "DO-RE-MI-FA-SO-LA"!!I love easy questions. Mala is a Sanskrit word, and in Sanskrit alla's are pronounced (uh). Mala is pronounced muh-luh.Don't know, but if sanskrit is like its descendents Hindi, Nepali etc. there aretwo "a" written with different vowel signs. In fact, in modern Devanagri scriptthe short "a" is inherent in the consonent and isn't written at all -- the long"a" is a vertical line following the consonent. I think mala uses the long "a"that sounds like the "a" in father. Anybody, who reads sanskrit know for sure? Both are long a's. I have just put up a page about Mala (also Power)Beads on Pay us a visit.PeacePete

MALA BEADS : Should mala beads be loose on the string? should there be knots betweenbeads? should the beads move or wiggle at all? im intrested in owning a set of beads but the styles are vastlydifferent. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated- tomLoose or knoted--either way Tom. The mala/prayer beads of Hinduism are oftensandlewood (for Ganesha), rudraksha (for Shiva) and Tulsi (for the Vaishnavas).generally for superstitious peopleInlight1 wrote in message ...Depends on the sampradaya. Normally you receive beads from the guru who alsogives you the mantra that is to be chanted on them. The guru also generallychants one round on the mala that he gives his disciple. Tulasi beads(Vaishnava) are usually tightly knotted, keeping each bead separate.Rudraksha beads (Saiva) are normally loose. Each bead on a Catholic rosaryis, I believe, secured and separated from the others, whereas Sufi beads arenot.
