MANDREL WRAPPED RINGS : In the 'Met' (I think) in New York City, they have a full drape for ahorse that was done in two differntly colored metals (can't rememberwhich two - but a really nice pattern) and the rings are super small...close to 1/8" ID rings of wire about the size of a standard paperclip... it's a late period parade peice and all the rings are butted..they might have a photo on their web-siteIn Europe I saw some Persian mail that was 1/2 inch OD, 16 or 18 gage riveted.The arms and armor museum in Bern has a very fine mail shirt, but I don't have any actual dimensions. MANDREL WRAPPED RINGS : I made a ring for a client that wears a size 5. A 4.5 will not fit overher knuckle. The ring is loose once over her knucle and will turn tothe side. She said her other ring did this too (the one she replacedthe ring I made for) but she's hoping there is a solution to the turningproblem. Any ideas out there?One solution to that problem is to solder two balls of gold (or whatever metalyou are using) at about 4:00-8:00 o'clock on the inside of the shank. The sizeof the balls will depend on the size of the shank of course, but make themlarge enough to "grab hold". This isn't perfect, but it does help.1. Wrap a hefty piece of rod round the band, solder in place, sawand file off what protrudes, leaving a big lump on the inside ofthe band. The finger cross section is fleshy on the underneathside so a blob there doesn't feel too bad.
MANDREL WRAPPED RINGS : 2. there are variations of this, where you make a better-fittingjoin between the ring band and the added bit, like file a matchinggroove in it.There are 3 ways of correcting this problem.1- Melt two pieces of gold (or whatever metal you are using) into balls (Ilike to use little jump rings so that they will be the exact same size) andsolder them onto the inside of the ring shank at about 4:30 and 7:30. You canthen smooth them out using a large cup burr (moving in circular motion) andthen polish. This allows the knuckel to slip in and the balls then hug thesoft part of the underside of the finger to keep it from moving.2- Another way is to roll out a piece of metal very thin. Form it into a 5/8ring that will fit inside the shank of the ring. Keep the metal springy. Polish it well. Solder it into the ring either by soldering in the middle tothe bottom of the shank or one side to one of the sides of the shank. You nowhave a spring inside the ring that will hold the ring tight and still.3- This is the easiest of the 3. Place the ring on the customers finger. Nowhit the finger with a hammer till it swells up to fit the ring. Unfortunatlythis method has to be repeated every time the swelling goes down. :-)

MANDREL WRAPPED RINGS : One simple version (I think it's called and adjusto shank, if I recall) uses ahinge on each side, with the bottom of the shank looking like a dimestoreadjustable shank except with the two sides each ending in a strap wrapped aroundthe other side (a bit like the classic elephant hair bracelets, if you know whatthose look like), so it cannot open past the point where the two straps touch,and the straps give the whole thing friction so it stays closed when squeezed.These are the simplest, and perhaps somewhat more durable than other types, butalso the least elagent looking. Then there is the classic finger-fit brand,which looks nice and last well enough, but requires some more skill to install,and is a pretty costly little finding to buy. Another one that I also like (alittle better, actually) is the finger-mate brand. and for wider rings worthose with odd shank shapes, I've on occasion just made a hinged shank with ahinge on one side and a snap catch on the other.
