MEN'S EARRINGS : My own explanation is that we're dealing in trends, notorchestrated movements. Yes there's a trend to earrings for men,a big one; and a trend to some other nontraditional jewelry formen. But it's isolated. No trends in men's clothing are female,or even unisex (unisex is mostly women adopting men's casualwear). Even the earring thing started out with a carefuldistinction: men always wore _one_ earring, while women alwayswore two. This has relaxed a little, now that earrings aremore-or-less accepted on men, but this rule was followed ratherstrictly at first. In my opinion, I think a lot of this derives from thefact that there's a stronger taboo in our culture against malehomosexuality, than female. Men tend to avoid any appearance offeminity, out of fear they will be thought gay.
MEN'S EARRINGS : In some subcultures it's cool. In the general cultureit's not, which means few will be able to find employment in aplace that doesn't care. Now, that's hard to understand! I sympathize with women'scomplaints about heels, they look ungodly to walk in. Why a guythat didn't have to would wear them, is hard to understand. Theskirt is cool, though. A contra dance is a folk dance, and the "unmasculine"symbolism of skirts and similar wraps, is confined to the lastcouple centuries of Western culture. Other cultures go all overthe map on this. Anyway, folk dance means folk dress; similarlogic to a Halloween party. Or to my stepdaughter's wedding,which had a lot of guys there in kilts, plus some swords andbagpipes. Men=choice, women=obligation? Sorry, too simple. Lots ofsocial trends can be espied in the evolution of fashion. Ihaven't noticed standards of business dress becoming either moreor less sexist, they've just followed the larger culture on thatscore. But the standards have become more informal and casual forboth sexes.

MEN'S EARRINGS : Heavy fighting has broken out in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, betweenforces of the transitional government and fighters loyal to a warlord.A BBC correspondent in Mogadishu said at least nine people have been killedand 30 others injured.The clashes are the first major confrontation between the militia factionswhich control much of the capital and the transitional government set up bya number of Somali groups last year in an attempt to reunify the country.Both sides were using machine guns and mortars in the Mogadishu port area.Hussein Mohamed Aidid, whose gunmen were involved in the fighting, is a keymember of a council, set up by several powerful warlords that, backed byEthiopia are seeking to replace the government.They say they will form their own government within six months, to rival thecountry's transitional administration.
