MEN EARRINGS : The fighting comes on the same day that another warlord in Mogadishureceived a convoy of heavy-duty lorries transporting weapons and ammunition.The convoy, consisting of 12 big trucks, was escorted by about 10 battlewagons and more than 100 heavily-armed militiamen.It arrived at the headquarters of warlord Muse Sudi Yalahow who alsostrongly opposes the new transitional government.The government accuses Ethiopia of supplying the weapons in an attempt todestabilise Somalia and has called on the international community to condemnAddis Ababa.Survivors of last Saturday's attack by Unita rebels on the Angolan town ofCaxito say the death toll was much higher than previously reported.Nuns from a mission in the centre of Caxito told the BBC they had seen atleast 200 bodies in the town's mortuary after the attack, with many morestill lying in the streets.
MEN EARRINGS : Official Angolan Government figures put the death toll at 76.In addition, a BBC correspondent in Luanda says sixty children abducted bythe Unita rebels from a school outside Caxito are still unaccounted for,despite government reports that some had been resuced.The nuns in Caxito said the town itself and the road to Luanda were nowsecure, but many who had fled the UNITA attack were still too frightened toreturn home.The Namibian Government has distanced itself from the actions of members ofthe paramilitary unit, the Special Field Force (SFF), who last week roundedup men wearing earrings, because they were supposedly gay.Government statement"The president had at no time issued orders in any shape or form for SFFmembers to act against anyone wearing earrings or any other piercing," theMinistry of Information said in a statement.
MEN EARRINGS : The daily newspaper, The Namibian, reported last week that SFF members hadstarted arresting men wearing earrings in Katutura, a suburb of the capital,Windhoek.The report said that the SFF members said they were acting on an order bythe president to clamp down on suspected criminals and gays.But the Ministry of Information said: "The government does not condone humanrights violations or harassment of individual citizens."One of the members of the paramilitary group was quoted as saying that theyordered the men to take their earrings off or would use force to take themfrom their ears if they did not comply."Where did you see men wearing earrings in our Oshiwambo culture. Thesethings never happened before independence," the SFF member was quoted assaying, referring to a Namibian ethnic group.
MEN EARRINGS : A reporter, speaking to some of the men who had been rounded up, was alsoarrested and only let go after the editor had phoned the police's head ofpublic relations to complain.The SFF commander Sacharia Asheela who arrived at the scene ordered the SFFmembers to hand back the earrings.He said to his men: "I told you not to assault or touch anybody. Who toldyou to take these men's earrings? It should not be repeated again."Disciplinary action has now been instituted against the SFF members.Over the past months President Sam Nujoma and home affairs minister JerryEkandjo have repeatedly criticised homosexuality saying it was a practicethat was "un-Namibian" and would not be tolerated in the country.In one speech President Nujoma said that the police should arresthomosexuals.
MEN EARRINGS : Something in films has been bothering me lately; why don't make-upartists, and or directors see to it that male ear-ring holes arecovered-up in period films?For example I'll list some recent films that I've noticed a prominentmale character with an ear-ring hole that shouldn't have been there.This includes Jude Law's in "Enemy at the Gates", the young architectfrom "Quills", several of the male leads from "Oh Brother Where ArtThou?" there are many more but I'm sure you get the idea. I really want to know how does such a thing slip by unnoticed? They're spending tens of millions of dollars on these films yet someonein charge doesn't stop and point out that a guy from the Russian armywouldn't have his ear pierced in the 1940's?
