MENS RINGS : Why am I posting this? Thought some people might be interested andtouting for business of course. :-)So, if you are ever at any shows (particularly Silverstone CoysFestival!) and you see a short-and-getting-plumper-Italian-lookin gwoman with ever increasing amounts of grey hair, sitting in a whitegarden-gazebo thingy surrounded by jewellery and stuff (and possiblychildren), come say hello. Gandalf observed onlythat Sauron never touched them or sullied them--he couldn't because themaker of the three (wasn't it Celebrimbor?) hid them as soon as the plansof Sauron became apparent. Further, the 16 rings for the lesser races were in fact great rings also:Gandalf in talking to Frodo said that he thought at first that Bilbo'sring was a lesser ring..."to the makers they were but trifles, mere essaysof their craft, but to my mind still dangerous to mortals"...but that Saruman discerned that the ring was "a great ring, because it gave longlife". But which? "Not the three, because they were not lost, and theywill not abide evil. Not the 7 or the 9, for they are accounted for.It must be the one, therefore..."
MENS RINGS : The details are fuzzy to me--I don't have my copy of Tolkien here, but thegist of the quotes is accurate. From this we see that all 20 of theserings were great rings, they were all the great rings, and there were otherrings of lesser power (notably that they do not extend life). And the 3rings of the elves were under Sauron's control, but were never turned toevil because they were concealed, apparently unused, while the one was onthe dark one's finger. The wise most likely knew that the one survived, since the threepersisted. They were unsure however, supposing that perhaps the 3 outlivedthe ruling ring because of their concealment. Gandalf who wore the ring offire knew the rings would pass from the world with the one, but he also seemed unsure. Unless that was a ruse, to conceal his posession of the ring.
