MIA POW BRACELETS : Thanks for clearing that up. I have a special fondness for theNam POW's and MIA's. I knew Harold Kahler's son and methis wife who lived in Tempe Az. She has since passed on and Ilost track of his son whom I liked a lot. I had a trunkload ofMIA/POW bracelets in my car for distribution back in the early 70's.She did a tremendous disservice to all American soilders - not just POWs. BTW,ask the average American about POWs in Viet Nam and they get an image of anAmerican pilot being held in a North Vietnamese prison. They have no idea ofwhat happened to many American soldiers that the VC captured in the South. Believe me, if they had seen it they would have a different view of MS.Fonda's activities.Did they do stuff like tie their hands behind their back, have thenkneel on the ground, hold a pistol to their head, and blow theirbrains out? Maybe even had somebody take a picture of it? Did theythrow them out of heliicopters? Did they cut off ears as souviners?
MIA POW BRACELETS : There is an ad on ebay for two "Original" POW Bracelets. Is this forreal? I don't have a clue about the history of those bracelets, butwhat exactly does "Original" mean anyway? Many have been remanufactured over the years. I don't know how you can tellan original from a remanufacture. The way I remember it they came out in the late 70's. They werestainless steel about5/8" wide and wrapped around the wrist without acatch. I think the name and number (not sure what it was) on it. Iremember somewhere hearing that there was only one per MIA in thebeginning. I have a link on my homepage that may be able to give an exact answer. Its on the Vet Page. They run the service near my old hometown.Bob..Let the enemy be regarded as a Pandora with the box opened; and the disguised one, as a serpent creepingwith his deadly wiles into Paradise. James Madison 1834 MIA POW BRACELETS : The original POW/MIA bracelets were made by VIVA (Voices in VitalAmerica) a non-profit group based in California (LA, I believe). They were made of silver-nickel and later copper and stainless steel.thesilver nickle-plated (the most popular one)broke in the middle veryeasily. It had one hole on the left end of bracelet (where it came offthe assembly line I assume). I still have my original because I hadanother hole put in the right side and had a jewler brad it on my wristin a perfect circle. (I have a small wrist.)The only information on the bracelet is the man's rank and name on oneline and the date he became missing or POW on the second line (engavedlike 11-30-68). (Stamped in black on the stainless steel - which fadedafter awhile).I have seen people still wearing the original copper and stainless steelbracelet, but never the silver-nickel like mine -unless it was tapedwhere it had broken in the middle. And I know of one person who had heroriginal covered (somehow) with real silver and another who had her'scovered in 14-k gold(a family member). MIA POW BRACELETS : There was also one other type of POW/MIA bracelet which a family groupproduced about the same time as VIVA's but it was heavy brass and costmore. I got one for my oldest son at the time, The writing on it was inscript (rank, name, service branch and date of loss was like 30 Nov 68.And I believe it had the country of loss on it too. After these original types were made, other types came out - redones(aluminum) black (KIA's), brass, and one with a picture of themissing person on it and another with names of POW/MIAs from aparticular state. There is also a bracelet for the 8 women on the wall, believe it is called Angles on the Wall.As for someone selling an original VIVA bracelet, if its the real mccoyand in mint condition, they never wore it. In addition, it should comewith a card that explains the bracelet and VIVA. My sister still has heroriginal VIVA (she was allergic to the metal) but she doesn't have thecard that came with it. MIA POW BRACELETS : These excerpts from Col. Bo Gritz's video "A Nation Betrayed" were compiled and edited from a longer series on POW/MIA's posted originally by (John DiNardo) The following excerpts are from a transcript of the video, A NATION BETRAYED:* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *COL. JAMES `BO' GRITZ:What I want to tell you very quickly is something that I feel is moreheinous than the Bataan death march. Certainly it is of more concern toyou as Americans than the Watergate. What I'm talking about issomething we found out in Burma - May 1987. We found it out from a mannamed Khun Sa. He is the recognized overlord of heroin in the world. Last year he sent 900 tons of opiates and heroin into the free world. This year it will be 1200 tons. [video showing discussion at Khun Sa's headquarters -- some translation of Burmese to English going on. Bo Gritz still narrating in foreground.]
