Most have CBRs, a couple have bent barbells.Personally, I prefer the look of a bent barbell. I have also been toldthat it's less likely to migrate because of its curvature and the reducedlikelihood of catching it on anything. Many studios will give you theirrecommendations about what type of jewelry to use, but allow you to picksomething else that is appropriate. The last time I was with someonegetting their navel done, the piercer recommended the barbell right offthe bat. You know, it's real dark out there at night;and cold, too. 40 degree water and dark. It's tough enough for folks tosurvive that are trained at it. It's gotta be a recurrent training, orfolks will just die. I think the navy does it right. They maybe shouldeven require it more often.You'd drown because you're blindfolded on two of those four runs. It's goodthey do it that way, too, since we fly over water at night.Water survival is required by OPNAV 3710.7 before aircrew can fly. That'swhy we do it before UPT startsMy SS-2 used to talk about his numerous accidents in H-3s, I think his finaltotal was 6 or 7 before he moved to VP, that was enough to enforce myfeelings on my decision to skip RSS and shoot for fixed wing (Respect to theSAR guys). I was flying a night mission in the Straights of Hormuz in early93, a double crew since were in for a long night of clearing the Nimitz BGthrough. I was sacked out in back when a yell from the other EWO woke me upto tell me that the mission had changed, that we were doing SAR. A helo fromHSL-37 had gone down, it hit home rather quickly, b/c we used to party withthese guys back at Barbers. We spent a couple hours trying to find any signof them with RADAR and IRDS, with no success. Finally the carrier releasedtheir SAR helo, it's crew located the wreckage in about 15 or 20 minutesIIRC. I always remembered hearing that if we went down, it would be no timeat all until someone found us. that night made me reevaluate my views a bit.
NAVAL JEWELRY : I had almost forgotten about the painted goggles, I got lucky and wasusually near the main door for that part, although when I rode seat #1blindfolded, I got caught on the panel seperating the "Cockpit" from thecabin, and the next thing I knew, a diver was yanking me out by my SV-2.It's the same reason that we used to do ditching drills with helmet bags orjackets wrapped around our heads, life is alot different when you've gotwater rushing into a dark cabin, and the floor panels are now just holes.I was trying to reason why the 3710 was setup that way, but when all elsefails, look it up in the regs. Its stuff like this.Yesterday, I was in my wife's jewelry store, and her customer was a civilianwith a particular stance that I recognized as a Naval Officer. I went on by,and she said, "This is my husband. He used to ride helicopters too." I shookhis hand, and he continued the story he was telling her about going down in anH-46 during a PAX transfer. He was pretty appalled that the event washappening, but he shook it off as the helo sank, and he grabbed his HEEDSbottle and started reacting to the accident.
