NIXON WATCHES : BTW- I wear a Casio G-Force and it's the first watch I've ever worn that Ihave absolute faith in (timekeeping AND indestructibility).Of course, it's a bit homely- sort of the Honda Element of watches. I likethe Element for its functionality and that makes it artistically attractiveto me. My friends think it's hideous.Ideally, I will also purchase a more "conventionally" attractive watch forspecial occasions, and I've been looking at the "Metal Limo" with the redand white face from Nixon. If you ever see one in person- the crystalappears to be backed with frosted glass, behind which is is a night lightthat produces a milky glow.Well- OK, since you asked, here's a link to Nixon- they have lots ofinteresting styles, many of which I find complimentary to modern one-handopening folding knives:

NIXON WATCHES : "Nixon" seems sympathetic, or at least not damning, but its structure indicatesa predominantly negative attitude toward the man. "Jack Jones" is a fictionalcharacter who serves many purposes: Checkers the dog was a gift from a man inTexas - who might well have been a vile Bircher like Jack Jones - wouldn't thepublic have been disheartened to learn something like that? Jones threatens toend Nixon's presidency (it did end prematurely, of course - right wingconspiracy?) and might have been in on Kennedy's assassination... this guyrepresents the dark underbelly of Nixon's constituency and exists entirely as acreature of the writer's imagination! Why put him in the film if the motive isto be fair and impartial to the subject, Nixon? Everything Nixon does in thisfilm is comical or corrupt or mean-spirited; everyone has parents and issues,so knowing that Nixon had siblings who died and a fondness for his daughtersdoesn't make him any more admirable or a less aloof figure. The fake newsreel,Nixon's (premature) political obituary, is another reflection of the filmmaker's negative attitude and shallow understanding of Nixon's career. Themore one watches "Nixon" the more biased it seems, and the bias against Nixoninfects the film at every level - acting, editing, dialogue, lighting,everything... Howard Sauertieg DSL/PSU

When Stone and Hopkins started filming, the Welsh actor was deepin prosthetics and voice duplication but the aids didn't work because no matterhow good an actor Hopkins is, he couldn't rise above the weight of caricatureas verdict. Yet his Nixon is a real reach into the man that all the other Nixonperformances have shied away from, because no director had the guts to try fora definitive study. This the surprise of "Nixon": it's Oliver Stone's mostbalanced, even honorable work; the caveat is that it's as balanced andhonorable a portrait of Nixon that Stone could accept as the kind ofprejudicial, provoking artist that he is. Not unexpectedly, the Nixon daughtershurriedly issued a public condemnation of the movie. There's a slim chance,after seeing it, they'll feel embarrassed by rushing to premature conclusions.(They'll never admit it.) Watching their father through Hopkins is likely toflash hurtful memories when they hear this Nixon warn about "the lie" and "thecover up." And deep pain when they watch Hopkins achieve an intense,extraordinary dimension built from torment, especially when his Nixon asks PaulSorvino's Kissinger to kneel with him and pray; when Hopkins is consoled byJoan Allen's Pat just before they climb the White House steps to thepresidential quarters for one of the last times; and when Hopkins verbatimsNixon's farewell to the White House staff. It's not possible to be unaffectedby these progressions into dissolution. Hopkins validates and makes poignantthe famous Nixon imagery; Stone's "fairness," though, isn't the same as fact.The screenplay's based on what's published, including contradiction, and it'sall been filtered as conjecture: that Nixon got involved with attempting toexecute Castro (but the mess backfired and JFK was assassinated as punishment);that Nixon was involved in Bobby Kennedy's death, and in the shooting of GeorgeWallace. Stone's not above putting accusations of crimes into Pat Nixon'smouth: she reminds Nixon that she knows what he did to Alger Hiss. With Stonepostulating, "Nixon" becomes a badly edited Reader's Digest version of Fawn M.Brodie's "Richard Nixon: The Shaping of His Character": lots of smeary quotes,gossipy tidbits, truncated flashbacks, but no real shaping. It's what makes"Nixon" a less than satisfactory muckraker: there's so much garbage thrown inthat you can feel yourself pushing away all the Adobe After Effects in order toget to the man; the graphic pizzazz in "Natural Born Killers" is okay for thetwentysomethings fed on MTV, but it lessens the prestige of "Nixon."
NIXON WATCHES : NIXON A film review by Edward Robert Champion Copyright 1995 Edward Robert Champion Nixon is perhaps the most blatant example of a crooked politicianthat the twentieth century has had to offer us. It's no surprise thatOliver Stone has decided to use him as the subject of his latest filmof the same name. This film seems to intimate at another JFK. Stone has once againproduced a film over three hours long. He has recruited JFK composerJohn Williams. He has a big budget and a name actor in the lead. Whythen is NIXON not the tour de force and acrimonious opus that JFK was? Oh, don't get me wrong. The film is amazingly well-directed, asis Stone's wont, and features Hopkins in the performance of a lifetime,adopting nearly every mannerism and gesture of the real-life Nixon. Itis perfectly cast, with Bob Hoskins eloquently evil as J. Edgar Hooverand other notable personages dissipated intermittently throughout thefilm.
