NOMINATIONS CHARMS : Speaking of confusing, whereas THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING was a complex tale,lucidly told, THE TWO TOWERS is frequently downright impenetrable. And, if youhaven't seen the first one, starting with the second is probably hopeless. After two-and-a-quarter hours have passed, one of the characters proclaims, "Soit begins!" The movie finally discovers its raison d'être with a big, longbattle sequence that takes up the rest of the time. It's impressive, it'sstirring, but I felt like I had seen it before.THE TWO TOWERS is entertaining, even if it is disappointing, clearly sufferingfrom a bad case of middle movie malady. Let's hope that Jackson learns from hismistakes this time and makes his final LORD OF THE RINGS film to be a worthycompanion to his first, which was one of last year's very best films. THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS runs a long 2:59. It is rated PG-13 for"epic battle sequences and scary images" and would be acceptable for kids around10 and up.

Watching this blaze of cinematicglory, then, I pretended that "The Two Towers" is allegorical, thatthe characters in the movie are stand-ins for real life people intoday's political world.

The title ring confers great, albeit ambiguous,power on whoever possesses it, which makes the chief hobbit,Frodo (Elijah Wood) together with his Sancho Panza-like Sam(Sean Astin) determined to destroy it. Therein lies the onlyopportunity for peace in the Middle Earth, now presumably at themercy of the white-bearded and white-garbed Saruman(Christopher Lee) who is determined to rule the world like somescuzz out of 007. A viewing of "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowshipof the Ring" is not essential to pick up the story, which is framedas a struggle between the forces of good and the armies of evil. The principal newbie is a computer generated image thatspeaks gibberish, Gollum (Andy Serkis), a small, anorectic-thincreature that could have some out the final scene of "2001` who isunderstood by Frodo while the audience gets the gist of hismeaning. Gollum is actually a hobbit who went nuts by holdingonto the ring for centuries Yet another computer generatedcharacter, amazing in its conception, is Treebeard (John Rhys-Davies), from the race of Ents, who is called upon to join theforces of good in the upcoming war.
NOMINATIONS CHARMS : Though we have to listen to the nutcase nonsense spouted byGollum, we are riveted by the best parts of the movie, the battleswhich are many and not far between. On the side of good,Gandalf (Ian McKellen) survives an awe-inspiring drop into thebowels of the Earth, assumed to be lost forever in a ferocious fightwith the dragon-like Balrog.THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS---------------------------------- ----As Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) are led towards Mordor by Gollum(Andy Serkis), the strange and conflicted former ring bearer, their fellowHobbits Merry (Dominic Monaghan) and Pippin (Billy Boyd) have beenside-trackedin Fangorn Forest by an equally strange creature, Treebeard (voice ofJohn Rhys-Davies), who doesn't know what to make of them. While searchingfor Merry and Pip, the warrior trio of Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Legolas (Orlando Bloom) and Gimli the Dwarf (John Rhys-Davies) learn about thepeople of Rohan, whose King (Bernard Hill) has been mesmerized by Sarumanspy Wormtongue (Brad Dourif), as an evil army approaches to destroy themin "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers."
NOMINATIONS CHARMS : The only beauty to be found in "The Two Towers" is in the faces of thewomen who love Aragorn, Arwen (Liv Tyler) and the Rohan King's nieceEowyn (Miranda Otto), and the majestic New Zealand landscape. The onlyhumor comes from Gimli, whose eagerness for battle is well met a multitudeof times. This second installment of the trilogy is altogether darker, grayer, grimmer and bloodier than the first.Unlike, say "The Empire Strikes Back," this bridging film cannot stand onits own, but it does propel the action forward towards the ultimate showdownwith Dark Lord Sauron. Fittingly, as battle makes for the bulk ofscreen time here, most of the focus stays on the heroic Aragorn, fleetbowman Legolas the elf and stalwart Gimli. Trying to find Merry andPippin, instead the trio are shocked to be met by Gandalf (Ian McKellan),transformed from the grey to a dazzling white. The foursome travel toRohan and cast out Wormtongue, but are dismayed by rejuvenated King Theoden'sdecision to take his people to Helm's Deep rather than staying tofight Saruman's army. Aragorn is visited by Arwen in his dreams andlooked upon longingly by Eowyn in daytime.
