If they are selling the 10 month pearls, thenacre will be extremely thin, and consequently fragileand subject to rapid wear.The beads for the nucleus are usually from US rivermussels (Unionada), and have a different coefficient ofexpansion from the deposited nacre. The thicker thenacre, the less likely that it will delaminate from thebead, the better the lustre and resistance to wear. Goodcultured pearls used to take three years, but sincetheir widespread acceptance as gems, and thedeterioration of the genetic stock of the shells,pressure to produce more, faster, has resulted in a muchlower quality on the market.

PEARL NECKLACES : The nacre thickness is not the issue, pearls havegrowth rings just like a tree, and one year's growth isnot enough to make a good quality bead. The thickness ofeach year's growth will depend on a number of factors;water temperature and quality, shell age, food supply,number of implant nuclei shell health, weather,placement in the shell and size.On a small bead the thickness will be greater as part ofthe inverse cube law applies. What you must remember isthat the colour is from successive density changes dueto the varying growth rate and number of years, combinedwith the clarity of the nacre. An opaque nacre or thick,single year nacre deposit will not have a lustre andwill be quite soft and porous, whereas the samethickness of clear nacre over multiple years will give abetter lustre and hardness. The principle is similar tothe difference between old growth trees and fast growingplantation trees. You would be better off with a threeyear pearl with 0.6 mm, than a ten month pearl of thesame thickness.
