PLASTIC ALPHABET BEADS : It's also available through Rio Grande, but they don't have pics on theirsite. If you're using same-size alphabet beads, you should be able to sitdown and make a pattern for each size. If the other beads you use arevery different in shape and size, then the easiest thing would be tobuy a bead board (plastic formed, then flocked, with channels markedwith inches) when you make the bracelets. You can see as you lay thebeads in the channels how long each bracelet is.~~SoozBat, bat, come under my hatAnd I'll give you a slice of bacon. And when I bake,I'll make you a cake,If I am not mistaken.Until you can get a bead board, use the back of a floss box (open lid), anda ruler. To keep from re-stringing, get alligator clamps from your home depot/radioshack (in the electronics section), and use it to clamp the end that you aredropping down onto...that way, if you goof, you can add/take away from theend. Or just work down to the area that you missed a bead or added too manybeads. Also helps if you are working straight off the spool to stop thebead, and there again, if you make a mistake, you can cut the wire, correct, and still use the clip to hold the spot.

PLASTIC ALPHABET BEADS : I have been toying with the idea of teaching a group of teenagers beading asan after school kind of thing. I spoke with the principal of the school, and he has to get "official permission" from the teacher's union to allow meto do this, even on a volunteer basis. However, I am in a bit of a quandary about where to begin. The kids want tolearn to make beaded pens, like the one I made for the pen swap (andcouldn't mail, so I've been wearing it around). However, I think thatspiral peyote with 11/0 beads is a bit of a reach for a beginner's project.I was thinking that I could teach them to make bracelets using 6/0's andsome of my fun and funky beads, on Stretch Magic. Later, if any of themwanted to learn beadweaving, I could teach them using 8/0s. If their heartsare set on pens, I've got a lot of polymer clay, and we can do that; lateradding beaded lariats with those plastic alphabet beads. (That way, therewill be no confusion about whose pen is whose)

PLASTIC ALPHABET BEADS : Whatever I do, it's going to have to be on my own dime. The school mydaughter attends is in a _very_ poor neighborhood, with over 70% of the kidsthere receive a government paid breakfast and lunch. What that really meansis that Delicas, Lampwork and Bali are out -- I want to use good seed beadsthough, because the cheap ones from Wal-Mart are a chore to work with. Ihave a slew of bone beads I got really cheaply, and those might be moreappropriate for the boys' things.Has anyone else done something like this? The kids are aged 12-15, boys andgirls, and all seem like good kids to me. (Which means they're regularkids. I've met maybe three kids in my life that I didn't think were goodkids) A couple have special needs, but I can deal with that as thesituation arises.

PLASTIC ALPHABET BEADS : Any suggestions for starter projects that don't look like starter projects? That's a great idea Kathy! Perhaps you could approach some bead suppliers tosee if they would be willing to donate beads etc for these classes? My LBS have classes for beginners and teach them how to make necklaces etcfrom seed beads but they are very decorative pretty ones. I think it's agood idea to start with something simple to find out how they will cope withthe harder stuff.Good luck with your idea!Cheers,Katherine--"Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination." -Oscar Wilde.Webmistress - Artist - "Kathy N-V" wrote in message...If you look at the new FMG catalog in their seed bead section they show akeychain made with 8o's. That would satisfy the stitch and it should be bigenough they'd have enough dexterity to do it. Use wooden dowels andscrew-eyes (????) and don't stress about the top. Just cinch it reallytight. Flowers, diamonds, stripes, simple initials, random pattens (kidscan get VERY creative) Good look and remember, they're just kids.

PLASTIC ALPHABET BEADS : And make fringe. Use all your "odd" beads. Kids will pick the things"adults" wouldn't.Oh, and don't forget, if you use needles, to blunt the tips so the kidsdon't draw blood. Wouldn't want anyone to get hurt.Kathy, I would be happy to donate for some of the expense if you can getthis going.Kathy HPlease let me know. To me, this is better than most of the donations I makewhere about half of it probably goes to bureaucratic functions."Kathy N-V" wrote in message...I had planned on doing some teaching this week, but the principal of theschool wants me to wait until after I've recovered from my surgery.Actually, he said, "Concentrate on yourself for once, for Chrissake."I'm doubly bummed because I usually make costumes for the children in dramaclass whose parents can't/won't make them. (These are usually the sameparents that don't show their faces at the play, either. :-( ) I wantedto do that this week as well, but the principal vetoed that, too. He saidthat they will make do with all the costumes I made and donated last year.Bleh. I _love_ making all the costumes for the kids.
