POW BRACELETS : I saw the traveling Wall a few years ago when it was in Omaha. As far as Iknow, I don't know anyone on it. Dad doesn't talk about Nam. I will one daymake it back to DC to see the real one.I was touched by the traveling Wall. I have never been so touched in my life. I cried and got goosebumps. We brought a balloon, not knowing what else to do. My folks went to see it and now Dad wants to go to the Wall, but Mom's not sureshe can do it.charlotteI've had this bracelet since the early 70's and even though I don't wearit any more, is sits here at my desk in plain sight, next to mycomputer. My POW's real name, I found out some years ago, is Edwin JamesFickler. He never returned. We each handle the wall in different ways. I live just south of DC anduse to visit the wall on a regular basis, but have not been for severalyears, now. I get depressed and very ANGRY when I see those 58,000+names on that cold stone. It'll be a long time, if EVER, that I trust agroup of people who want to send another group of people to die. Forwhat?
POW BRACELETS : I*m still suffering from jet lag after my trip to and from NYC (and holycow, it was cold!) and will read all the stuff that has come in since Ileft when I*m more conscious, but I had to add to this one.I wore the POW/MIA bracelet of a friend from high school for years andwhen he came home in March of 1997, I felt incomplete without it, so Iordered a black band--meaning I knew someone who had been killed inVietnam. I got it from:Danang Enterprises14 Emery Rd.Townsend, MA 01469(508--597-6958)They sell a lot of military stuff--patches, flags and so on, and thebands--copper, aluminum--some with a lot of info (hometown, etc) andsome with just the basic stuff. Kiki (who is overjoyed to be back inHawaii)Wore it for many, many years until a case of poison ivy made me take it off.It now sits on my headboard. POW BRACELETS : There is an ad on ebay for two "Original" POW Bracelets. Is this forreal? I don't have a clue about the history of those bracelets, butwhat exactly does "Original" mean anyway? Many have been remanufactured over the years. I don't know how you can tellan original from a remanufacture. The way I remember it they came out in the late 70's. They werestainless steel about5/8" wide and wrapped around the wrist without acatch. I think the name and number (not sure what it was) on it. Iremember somewhere hearing that there was only one per MIA in thebeginning. I have a link on my homepage that may be able to give an exact answer. Its on the Vet Page. They run the service near my old hometown.Bob..Let the enemy be regarded as a Pandora with the box opened; and the disguised one, as a serpent creepingwith his deadly wiles into Paradise. James Madison 1834 POW BRACELETS : The original POW/MIA bracelets were made by VIVA (Voices in VitalAmerica) a non-profit group based in California (LA, I believe). They were made of silver-nickel and later copper and stainless steel.thesilver nickle-plated (the most popular one)broke in the middle veryeasily. It had one hole on the left end of bracelet (where it came offthe assembly line I assume). I still have my original because I hadanother hole put in the right side and had a jewler brad it on my wristin a perfect circle. (I have a small wrist.)The only information on the bracelet is the man's rank and name on oneline and the date he became missing or POW on the second line (engavedlike 11-30-68). (Stamped in black on the stainless steel - which fadedafter awhile).I have seen people still wearing the original copper and stainless steelbracelet, but never the silver-nickel like mine -unless it was tapedwhere it had broken in the middle. And I know of one person who had heroriginal covered (somehow) with real silver and another who had her'scovered in 14-k gold(a family member). POW BRACELETS : There was also one other type of POW/MIA bracelet which a family groupproduced about the same time as VIVA's but it was heavy brass and costmore. I got one for my oldest son at the time, The writing on it was inscript (rank, name, service branch and date of loss was like 30 Nov 68.And I believe it had the country of loss on it too. After these original types were made, other types came out - redones(aluminum) black (KIA's), brass, and one with a picture of themissing person on it and another with names of POW/MIAs from aparticular state. There is also a bracelet for the 8 women on the wall, believe it is called Angles on the Wall.As for someone selling an original VIVA bracelet, if its the real mccoyand in mint condition, they never wore it. In addition, it should comewith a card that explains the bracelet and VIVA. My sister still has heroriginal VIVA (she was allergic to the metal) but she doesn't have thecard that came with it.
