Her whole approach was to treat them like a chore insteadof truly mastering in them. It was evident in her choppy movements, lack ofrhythm, and CHOKING with a big lead, the surest sign someone has not masteredthe basics. A gymnast at that level simply doesn't blow a lead that big. Ifthey do, the best thing to do is just scrap their current style and start over. Chessplayers do that all the time. Old saying: if you can't handle threepieces (king and pawn vs. king), you can't handle "two and thirty" (the wholeboard).
ROXY WATCHES : It was an overall attitude which displayed contempt for advanced basic trainingwhich manifested itself there and in many other places. You're looking at thesymptom while I was looking at the root cause, which was her moving up thelevels too fast as a youth. Chessplayers have that problem all the time andthey hit a wall when they have to compete at the highest levels. They call it"perfecting one's mediocrity." Those minor weaknesses which Nessa's brilliancewould overcome against Americans would shine like a sore thumb internationally,where the margin for error was lower. The lower margin for error put greaterpressure on her, making mistakes even more likely.I didn't say COMPETE L4; I said TRAIN at L4. I know that sandbagging isillegal, though I'm sure many top gyms do it to get glory. If a gymnast hasbad fundamentals, you have to go back to the beginning to see where they pickedthem up. Nessa's problems began when she moved up from L4; that was obvious.

Captain America got hit right between the eyes by the brief explosionof the crumpet the poor chap has been sitting on for a week or two too long.Uh.... huh huh... huh huh huh... Beavis and Butthead are funny, and Roxy Musicis not.I didn't think I was stomping on Roxy Music. Hell, I own a copy of "Avalon"and like it. I happen to like Tull better - that's my preference and I feelpretty good about myself for it. I think other people might've stomped on RoxyMusic... and I think the stomps that were made might have been justified intheir eyes - that's pretty much their call.
ROXY WATCHES : Thanks to everyone who came out last night to our 80's night. It was awonderful time. And congratulations to Ellie Novick, who, by identifyingthe sole 90's song of the night ('Sex on Wheelz' by TKK) won herselfguestlist for two months. It was really fun to dust off some of the old CDs and vinyl that haven'tbeen played in years. Also I want to thank Celeste, who celebrated her27th birthday by doing a guest DJ spot for us. She played a wonderful set,and seeing as how this was her first time guest DJing I hope she enjoyedherself enough to want to do it again some time. Also a big thanks to Xianfor guest DJing last night. Having him spin last night reminded me of justhow much I miss working with him. it's always a fun experience to DJ withhim!
ROXY WATCHES : Also I want to apologize on behalf of all DJs from last night for notplaying all of your requests. Given that before we entered the club wealready had about 25 requests and add on top of that the fact that everytime I turned to cue up a new song it seemed like someone else wasstanding over my shoulder with another request for us. I suspect that ifwe were to have played nothing BUT requests, we would still not havegotten to all of the requests. Plus the fact that our sets were shorterfitting new requests in at the last minute was VERY difficultupcoming events: next week (12/17): The Roxy Resurrection holiday food drive and gothicbake sale. Bring a non-perishable food item (you're encouraged to bringmore then just one item) and get a dollar off at the door. And then goupstairs to buy lots of sweets from the bake sale. All proceeds from theBake Sale will be going to the Whitman Walker Clinic.
