SAPPHIRE JEWELRY : No, you would probably not call it extremely hard, because we are too used to thinking in terms of sapphires and diamonds and other heavy- weights. But I figured that Cindy aren't - and beryl is definitely among the hardest minerals on this planet. No, sir, it is advice to a layperson who apparently likes her stone veryYep. Peter, this is the group where, when they discover some rare and new(to them) gemstone or mineral, like, for example, beryl... (grin), theywrite a post asking if anyone else has heard of it, and what are it'sproperties. They don't want gemological properties. They want to knowabout it's "energies" and what it can heal... The best post I saw thereyet was from the guy who, asked how one should best cleanse the oldenergies from one's crystals, or recharge them, or something, replied thathe liked to urinate on them. Felt it built up a bond or something, aswell as cleansing the old, vile, energies. Even the other folks on thatgroup seem to have had a hard time keeping a straight face...
SAPPHIRE JEWELRY : It's interesting to note that in a day and age where physicists debate thenature of the first fraction of a second of the universe's life, and peerbillions of miles into space and years into the past, that more people onthe planet understand and believe in astrology than in astronomy orphysics...And as to hardness of beryl, It may be very hard compared to all theminerals on earth, but only one, quartz, really matters, as it's thecommon component of house dust, sand, concrete, etc., that seems to be themost defining point in how well a stone will resist wear and tear in dailyuse. Beryl is good in this regard, of course, but not outstanding... know that stones have healing properties but No, we do not have proof that them do *not* have healing properties either, so we should all just be open for all suggestions. But I have to admit that I am probably not very intel- ligent, because I think that this property talk is pure b*llsh*t... On a side note, how would you like being treated the Medieval way if you had a stomach pain? I have read that several kings and popes were persuaded to swallow hefty doses of ground sapphire and emerald, with the odd pearl and diamond mixed in for luck of course. Must have been hell on the stomach lining...! I have only ever seen *one* good, rational explaination for a supposedly "magic" property of a gemstone, namely this:

You had to press it against the nose, and presto! the blood would stop running. Anyway, it actually works...with *any* stone. It is just that stones are usually cold, and if you press something cold against your nose you are likely to stop the bleeding...Peter, up around Taos and Santa Fe, there are shops and people that youcan make appointments with to give your crystals a tune up and at thesame time have your body treated with crystals and energy stones to cureyou of about anything. Some of the biggest names from Hollywood and NewYork make appointments. Don't knock it, if those people do it how couldit be wrong.

No disrespect intended, of course.While I will never tell anyone what to believe, or respect them less forbeliefs I don't agree with, I reserve the right to believe that some ofthese beliefs are ludicrous, an/or a bit silly. Many of them areinteresting historically, and draw from long traditions of man's attemptto explain the universe before he had anything other than the explanationshis own imagination could dream up on which to base his beliefs. Man is an interesting creature, aware of past, future, and his owneventual death. Attempts to understand his world find meaning in allthings are not just a critical survival skill, but a constantpreoccupation. The structures we cook up to help us understand our placein reality are vital parts of our lives. It's interesting that it almostdoesn't matter whether the answers themselves have any relationship to thetruth. If we believe it, and can function within these beliefs and findour answers there, then they work. The same sort of this holds true forsocietal structures. Many schemes are possible of how people interrelate,what's right and wrong, how to behave in various situations, etc. Solong as it's consistant with itself, the society functions and people cansurvive in it.
