SEED BEADS : If you are going to do bead weaving where you are going to pass the threadthrough your beads several times, you will probably want Japanese seed beadsin which case, you will not have much choice as in the USA, Japanese seedbeads come loose and not on hanks. They are available strung in Japan. Ingeneral (this is a wild generality), Czech seed beads are narrower (lessthick if you like) than Japanese seed beads. The holes are also generallynot as uniform or as large as Japanese seed beads. If you buy Taiwanese orIndian seed beads, these are less even in both hole size and bead size butthey will cost you less.The cheapest way to buy beads is of course Wholesale. Wholesale meansbuying in quantity so the more you buy (of one colour and type of bead) at atime, the less it costs you. Unfortunately not many of us wants 20 kilo ofblack size 11 seed beads for instance. If we did we could buy reallycheaply direct from the source country.
SEED BEADS : Each manufacturer has their own numbers and each may have a diferent name for virtually the same color. In Fact, not only are the color number usually different between manufactuers, they can be different within the same company for different styles. Next some give a different number to the same color for regular and matte - not too mention different shapes.To make it even more confusing - many bead sellers have their own numbering system (even me) - Which is why I have begun a "cross reference chart" on my web site (anyone who wants to help add to it is more than welcome to supply additonal information). Incidentally, the "TR" probably indicates a shape - the 001 is probably a color, Which reminds me I have to go do some color matching for the New Delicas and also for new 14's
SEED BEADS : Besides the reasons you list, delicas also have larger holes, which can bequite helpful (not to mention saving needles). For me, the choice betweendelicas and round seed beads is primarily visual. I've never had anybeads break (maybe I'm just not as rough as some folks) and I'll live withthe smaller hole for round seed beads or the expense of the delicas inorder to make something look the way I want (I just finished a "space"amulet bag with delicas that took me ~60 hours and I calculated the totalcost at $98, although $60 of that is four sterling space-shuttle charms inthe fringe).The delicas are even when you look at a "fabric" of them -- it looks a lotlike a tapestry and generally I like this look when I do detailed picturesin beads. The round seed beads have more *depth* -- they're a diamond incross-section (as opposed to the delicas which are cylinders incross-section), so there is a *texture* to the fabric. I tend to usethese when I'm concentrating more on the fabric itself than a picture. And occasionally, I just use whatever I already have the right colors inwhen I'm in a hurry. ;)
SEED BEADS : Delicas are definitely more uniform and do run a bit more than seedbeads; of course, the price difference isn't as great as it seems,since you have to do some culling (quite a bit with some) with seedbeads as you do your project. Delicas/Antiques have more usable,uniform beads per weight unit than do most seed beads.As far as the other 2 points, Delicas do come in quite a few colors/finishes (some unique), but when compared against both Japanese andCzech seed beads, I wonder if seed beads might not have more colors/finishes. I do know that Virginia Blakelock (who does quite a bit ofloomwork that's 'painting-like') uses seed beads for all the variationsin color, reflectivity, etc. As far as breakage, I've yet to break a Delica, and haven't really heardthat this is a problem. The only time I tend to break beads is when Itry to force too much thread through a bead; Delicas have such nicelarge holes that this is rarely a problem.
SEED BEADS : I think it depends upon the look you're trying to create: Delicas givea very uniform, precise look, while seed beads produce a more rounded,softer feel. Just depends on the project, I guess. I think one of thebiggest reasons a lot of beaders are sold on Delicas is the uniformity -makes beading a lot easier and quicker.I'm not sure that delica beads come in more finishes, though General Beadin San Francisco commissions colors from Muyiki and seems to have a reallyphenomenal selection. The colors and finishes are unique,though, especially the matte colors, I think, and more interesting thanmost of the regular type 11*s - more subtle, classier (?) colors. I taught myself peyote after years of looming, so I think peyote or brick stitch has to be an improvement over the limitation of the right-angle designs of looming, where you are limited to right-angle designs. I think peyote is easier than brick stitch, especially in terms of tension in stitching, as someone else mentioned earlier.
