In the books, Fleming name-drops to give ashorthand description of Bond's character. That Bond drives asupercharged Bentley (with a magnetic clutch) tells us that he is notonly into fast cars, but also fascinated by gadgets. That he uses aWalther PPK tells us that he has an extreme level of self-confidence.That he drives a BMW Z3 for something like 30 seconds in the lastmovie tells us that BMW paid the producers a bunch of money.

It was evidently not misplaced, since he shot the Spang guy 4times through the window of a speeding locomotive using a .25 caliberpistol with the sights filed off in _Diamonds are Forever_. Flemingevidently didn't share his fantasy alter-ego's confidence, though,having let himself be brow-beaten into changing Bond's preferredarmament on the basis that the Beretta was a "ladies' gun".I agree that the name-dropping in the novels was meant to give Bond anair of sophistication. He even gets down to the level of naming thebrands of soap that he bathes with, as well as that which he prefersthe women that he sleeps with to use. In _The Spy who Loved Me_ hetell the girl to quit using Camay and get some Guerlaines.
SEIKO WATCHES UK : Especially since, if Bond were going to drive such a car, it wouldprobably be the similarly styled but much hotter "M" car, which is theEuro version of the Z3, but which happens to be unavailable in the USat this time. Can't go showing them a car that they can't buy, now canwe?There's been product placement in the Bond films since just about thebeginning. Seems like the end credits of almost every one has a laundrylist of car manufacturers, jewelers, etc. I remember seeing Sonyequipment in YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE. If anything, I wonder if the Bond filmsweren't among the first to feature products in that manner.The TV commercials that are now showing before the movie opens areperhaps a different matter, but they've all been pretty clever, Ithought, and I'm sure the producers love getting extra exposure at theexpense of BMW, Visa, etc. Considering how moribund the franchise was,say, about 10 years ago, it's hard to picture anyone wanting to do suchtie-ins back then. Now, Bond seems to be hip again in the eyes of thepublic. It's only natural that advertisers would want to take advantageof that. It's not going to affect my opinion of the movie, any more thanall the other movie tie-ins perpetrated by McDonald's, Pepsi, etc.
