SILVER FEATHER EARRINGS : After that, enjoy!!!! I don't think you need to persuade anybodyanything. They're your ears, baby!! AND, it's not like you're gettingsomething ELSE pierced (ouch). If you're really concerned about infection, have a professional piercer do it with a piercing _needle_, not a gun. A needle slicesa clean hole, whereas the stud used in piercing guns rips a hole.Believe me, a needle will bruise a lot less and heal quicker, becausethe wound edge isn't ragged. A captive bead ring instead of a studwill make the whole thing easier to clean, and allows room for yourear to swell a little. Piercing studs sometimes aren't long enoughand they pinch if your ear swells.Of course the real concern is that a piercing gun cannot be autoclaved, and the end of it is in direct contact with someone's skin and blood.Piercing needles are used *once*, only on you, and come straight outof the sterile autoclave packaging. If you're at all concerned abouthepatitis or HIV, have a professional piercer do your ears. Make surethe shop has an autoclave and that the piercers wear latex gloves todo piercings.
SILVER FEATHER EARRINGS : A word on using rubbing alcohol -- it's not a very good antiseptic, and dries out the skin around the piercing. A good antibacterial solution like Bactine is much gentler and does a better job at killinggerms. Some people prefer dilute tea tree oil (melaleuca alternifolia).I know the Body Shoppe now sells a liquid soap with tea tree oil in it. I used tea trea oil on my nose piercing with good effect (piercedwith a needle, not a gun, and it healed much faster and was less painfulthat my ears that were done with a piercing gun). The best newsgroup to ask about piercings is rec.arts.bodyart.A lot of the people there are into all sorts of body piercing, but they *will* answer you questions about ear piercing. SILVER FEATHER EARRINGS : When I got mine pierced I had it done in a Dr's office and put 14k goldposts in. I religiously swabbed the holes with alcohol or hydrogenperoxide and turned the earrings. None the less, one of my earseventuallly became really swollen and filled with pus and the earring hadto be removed by the Dr. with a tool as the lobe was all swollen around it.I kept a gold wire in until it healed. The other ear had no problemswhatsoever.Later on I decided to get a second hole in one ear and had it done at amall jewelry cart place. They used a gun and a stainless steel typeearring punch. I did not have a problem with this piercing. So the point is, you never can be sure, its really an individual thing andno matter where or how you have it done and no matter how careful you areyou can still have a problem. Or you can have no problems! SILVER FEATHER EARRINGS : as a practical note on piercing... you are really better off having it done with a needle rather than a gun. the guns really can't be sterilized. the needle IN the gun can be, but the gun its self can't. so, it's a bit of a risk. check the rec.arts.bodyart FAQ for more info on this. i'd never have another gun piercing! someone has to be responsible for creating the beautiful things in life1) 14k gold has a relatively high nickel content. If you're allergic _at all_ to nickel, then gold is probably a bad choice. Surgical stainless steel also has nickel, but the crystaline structure of the alloy keeps most of it from leeching into the surrounding tissue. If you're really allergic, use niobium or titanium, the same stuff that's used in surgical implants. SILVER FEATHER EARRINGS : 2) To be kind...many doctors don't know what they're doing with piercings. Including the fact that a captive bead ring (which means the ring rotates all the way through the pierce -- there's no post) acts as a drain and makes it easier to keep a new pierce free of debris and fluids. A post of _any_ sort isn't the best thing for a new piercing. Professional piercers get to see impacted piercing studs all the time. Which is why _they_ almost always use rings or barbells sized to facilitate cleaning.3) If your doctor told you to use rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide, it doesn't sound like he knows much about wound healing. There've been a number of studies in the medical journals now about the deleterous effects of "standard" first aid remedies. Iodine is also bad, by the way. And antibiotic ointments can trap anerobic bacteria in the wound. Benzalkonium chloride (active ingredient in Bactine) and its relatives are much kinder to healing wounds. That's why the "Ear Care" solutions are more expensive than alcohol. They're _not_ alcohol.
