I have the most success by pretending I am practising an intimate moment with my girlfriend. You wouldn't believe the size of the smoke rings that can be produced.Well, it's been a while since I smoked, but I used to be fairly good atit... rings, I mean. Well, at smoking, too, for that matter. You are oflegal age to smoke, right?..
SMOKE RINGS : Okay, I think the key is to take a breath *first* so you have a lungful(well, two, I guess) of air, and then take the smoke into your mouth,but don't inhale it deeply. (This gives you a thicker smoke in yourmouth.) Then form your lips into a fairly small circle, and pucker themout. (I guess there's only one direction you can pucker, actually, huh?)Then the usual technique is to sort of pump out little bursts of air --quite softly, generally with a little cheek-muscle action. (Aren't youglad you took a good breath at the beginning now? See, you needed it.) With a little practice, you can vary the size and speed of the rings,and do things like blow a large one and then a small one that goesthrough it. Even a slight breeze will screw up smoke rings, though. Ifthere is a draft, probably the best idea is to blow the rings in thedirection of the air current, but that's not as good as really stillair.

SMOKE RINGS : One way I'm occasionally better at it is to lightly blow through thepipe in a short, quick burst. If the air is very still, it will producea nice, big smoke ring.I do... a while back there was a similar thread where I believe JeffFolloder related he was able to blow a small ring through a larger one,and iirc he had done a small one within a small one within a larger oneat least once. Not for me to try. ;)No, I am able to get respectable smoke rings about 50% of the time bypopping my jaw as described in this summer's P&T. Once my wife waspopping in and out of the garage while I was enjoying a pipe and I blewa couple to show her -- she just chuckled at me. }) This is a skill Iam just picking up -- it's only been three or four weeks since Iactually started doing them intenionally.
SMOKE RINGS : Previously, rings would form accidentaly on occasion as I puffed (withthe bit still in my mouth, amazingly); or from the bowl, most often frombilliards, apples or princes. Lately I've beenaiming at my wind chime - my goal is to get a ring to impale itself onthe bell. Well, that's what I say. Actually, I'm just blowing smokerings, and no doubt this project will go by the wayside and I'll findsome other excuse to practice...
