STONE SKULL BEADS : Irish Life Assurance plca insurance company also has a 6 booklet package on houses, clothing , trade, the city of Dublin in 988 etc. Its in a very short format but does cover thebasics. Im afraid they didnt have an address in the booklets though.I hope this helps. I have more material I couldnt find right away so will postmore as I find it. Feel free to e-mail me with any questions you have and Iwill send you what I have.Ok a brief over view of the data I have.Typical Viking DressFemaleLong woollen or linen chemise sometimes long enough to trail behind the wearer.Overdress usualy woollen suspended from a pair of shoulder straps, each heldby a oval domed brooch.A necklace often linking the brooches.A shawl or cloack like a Irish brat compleated the ensemble fastened at thethroat by a third brooch or pin. There is some evidence for gloves and hats.A large number of silk caps and neckerchiefs (worn to keep to keep the woolfrom abraiding the neck) have been found.Dublin population seems to have worn low ankle height boots of soft leathermade of three pieces two uppers and a lower (no heels) laced to close them. This differs from other viking era finds in that the Norse wore higher bootsand the Irish sandals.Underwear is hinted at but the linen did not survive well enough to beidentifyed.Belts were worn by both sexes.Knives, purses, combs where suspended from the belt. Keys on the belt is thesign of a married Norse woman. They say the clothes were highly colored ( what ever that means in real life?)
STONE SKULL BEADS : MaleT tunic mid thigh to knee length close fitted sleaves.Either broad of narrow trousers ankle length.Boots as noted above.Cloaks woollen, Shaggu woollen, fur or hide( not as often as in the movies)worn off one sholder with a brooch. The sax ( belt knife was sometimes worn in a sheath that was part of the beltand horizontal rather than vertical to the ground) .You might add a scale set and a knife sharping stone as well.JewelleryAmber necklaces( a amber merchant's house was one of the finds) , pendants,ear-rings and finger rings were abundant in amber.Glass beads ( disc, quoit and segmented beads being the most popular),Some stone disk beads where also found. One set of cornelian ( a pink stomefrom centeral Europe was very nice.Silver ( ya sure you bet cha ) Armlets, pennanular and kite shaped brooches STONE SKULL BEADS : Wow! Thank you so much! I don't suppose (and if it was in this message and I missed it, sorry) they found anything in the way of musical instruments, did they?OK good question They found a flute tip made of wood in Dublin and a Pan pipe made out of asingle block of wood in the dig in York( yes I know this is England but it isthe same time period and simular groups). From other sources (Sagas,Eddas, etc) we know they had harps. I will check intothis question some more and post again.I haven't yet run across any source specifically focussing on this topic(and I've had my eyes open since I've got a novel in progress thatinvolves that setting) but any good book on the early medieval history ofIreland should cover enough to get you started. For example, Daibhi oCroinin's "Early Medieval Ireland 400-1200" (Longman 1995) has an entiresection on Norse interactions in Ireland. For a certain amount in the wayof artifacts, you might look for "Irish Archaeology Illustrated" ed. byMichael Ryan (Country House 1994) which has recently shown up in softcover on remainder tables in my neck of the woods. There are a couple ofbooks that cover the excavations of Norse Dublin -- somewhere I have acitation for what claims to be the definitive publication on theseexcavations, but unfortunately I can't lay hands on it right now. Youshould also check out sources from the Norse angle -- which may havesections specifically on Ireland, or may simply be useful for backgroundmaterial. To the best of my knowledge, there isn't a lot of directevidence on clothing and everyday life from Norse Ireland specifically, but there is plenty of evidence on Norse culture in other regions, and acertain amount of extrapolation may help fill in the holes.
