TIBETAN BEADS : 2 -Most Mahayana buddhist sects seem to have prayers beads. I even cameacross zen prayer beads. Could you give information on the different sectsand their distinct mala? 3 -Different materials are used for the beads. Bodhi tree seeds, different kinds of wood, stones and even ivory (probably forbidden now). What material could be considered typical or original? Is it just a matter of taste and wealth? 4 - Some mala have tassels some don't. What is the use of them? 5 -And the most important question I have is what is recited when using theprayer beads? I understood that in Tibetan buddhism they recite omnipadma... What do they recite in Chinese and Japanese sects? It can't be acomplete sutra for every bead or can it? 6 -Related to this. I forget now.I think they're to keep track of sets (I may be mistaken about this asI'm an ex-Catholic, and I use the tassels like Catholics use theirdividers).Chinese - "(Namo) Amit'o Fuo" (Homage to Amitabha Buddha, the Buddha ofBoundless Light) "(Namo) Kuanyin Puza" (Homage to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva)Japanese - "(Namo) Amido Butzu" (Homage to Amitabha Buddha)Korean - "Namo Kannon Boza" (Homage to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva) "Ma-um" (Mind)These are the ones I know of / can think of at the moment. I've alsoseen entire sutras recited to beads... it's one bead PER SYLLABLE if Iremember correctly. In Chinese I've seen the Heart and Amitabha Sutrasrecited thus. Same goes probably for other ones as well.

Cananyone care to expand on this?Correction: Koreans also say Namu Amitabul (Homage to Amitabha Buddha).Kwan Se Um Bo Sal (or Kwan Um Bo Sal for short) is the Korean word forAvalokitesvara. Here's an interesting one - Won Buddhism ( a more modernform of Buddhism) adopts Namu Amitabul but reinterprets it as discoveringone's Buddha nature.Both of these explanations are correct. 108 was a number that fascinatedthe Indian numerologists, because it is 1*2*2*3*3*3. So every Indianreligious tradition attached some significance to the number 108. ForBuddhists, the significance was that there are 108 defilements.Therefore, when one does a ritual to purify defilements, one usuallydoes 108 repetitions, one for each defilement. Within Buddhism there areseveral (I am tempted to say there are 108) explanations of how exactlyone arrives at the figure of 108 defilements.
