USED ROLEX WATCHES : The bottom line in owning a Rolex watch is to enjoy it for yourself, andto hell what other people think. If you like its classic styling andrugged durability irrespective of the cachet, you are on the rightpath. If you buy a watch to impress someone else you are wasting yourmoney. I think this is why the true watch afficianado often poo poo'sfolks who think Rolex is the be all the end all of the watch world. Sure, it's a good watch. It's rugged. But it's way overpriced unlessyou purchase used. In the latter instance, you can pretty much expect tobe able to sell your used Rolex to a third party and recover most if notall of your original cost. The price on the used market is supported inlarge part by the efforts of Rolex SA to protect their trademark, theiradvertising, their dealer pricing restrictions, and so forth. We havethus come full circle.
USED ROLEX WATCHES : A better example would be vintage Val 22 chronos. The intrinsic valueof the movement is about $200. That's what bare movements go for onebay, even with parts missing. In a watch it could cost you about $400-$500unless it says Heuer on the dial. Then for noother reason than thatit's a $1500 watch. It's not a better watch than, say, a $400 Mulcoit's just a more expensive watch. Now if it says Rolex on the dialit's a $10,000 - $15,000 watch for no other reason than it's brandedRolex - in that era they made no modifications to the movement andused standed cases with plan old leaky flat pushers, not the screwdown pushers everybody used later on. People pay a premiun for theextrinsic value of the brand, and they pay dearly to the pointwhere fakes abound - unusual if not unheard of for 60 year old watches,but it happens - I saw a fake rose gold Rolex Val 72C last month thatsome moron paid $30K for.
USED ROLEX WATCHES : The watch hobby is filled with such irrationalities - look at theLemania 15TL based watches of the 30s 40s and 50s. Using a Lemaniacaliber 15TL Tissot, Omega and Lemania made identical watches differingonly in the signature on the case, dial and movement. Keep in mind Lemaniamade the cases, dials and movements yet a steel Lemania goes for $400while the better known Omega goes for $1500 in steel, $2500 in gold filland $3500 in gold. So much for the theoretical desirablity of an "in house"movement - branding trumps that by a large margin.The triumph of extrinsic over intrinsic value is what Rolex is all about.Any famous brand - Cartier, Breitling, you name it, suffers from thisas well.There seem to be two kind of watch hobbyists - brand chasers and peoplethat actually know about the mechanics. Among the latter Rolex is not a serious watch, it is jewelrey you wear to impress your banker.
USED ROLEX WATCHES : So, to answer the original question, "are Rolex watches any good"the answer depends onf what you mean when you ask the question.If you want a halfway resonable watches, don't really care what it costs,but care that it's very liquid and recognozable and don't mind subsidizingcar races, polo tournaments and tennis matches all over the workd then yeahit's a superb watch.If the question speaks to the intrinsic merit of the watch - eh - thecases are ok, the dials aren't bad, but the movements aren't so great(except for the outsourced chrono movements), service it likely tobe expensive (most watchmakes will love you and tell you what a greatwatch it is, basiclaly they see you coming a mile away) so no, inthat context there are other watches which represent much greater valuefor the money.

Itseems that to transport it through USA it would have needed the keys changedto plastic. Very Eco friendly. So perhaps there is such a ruling on Rolex,but personally I doubt it.How would you enforce it? How many Americans wear Rolexes, rather than keepthem in the bank? and how many wear them for overseas travel every day?Have not customs officers got something better to do? Just curious.
