VINTAGE WATCHES : Here are some questions I just asked on internet. Perhapssomeone cares to comment further.I don't believe any watches have been produced in the U.S. for morethan twenty years. Even the American names are Swiss or Asian made.Am I correct that you are at Research Triangle Park in NorthCarolina? I looked in the NAWCC Mart for advertisements from yourarea. I know someone must be out there but found no likely ads.There was an ad for watch display cases from Carolina Custom Case Co.in Lumberton. The owner is Al Bernhardt (919)738-7634. He may beable to give you a lead. Many dealers do mail-order. As to trust-worthiness, Caveat Emptor. If the watch does not run aand the sellersays it needs a minor repair, he is almost certainly lying.You are correct. The problem is the it is difficult to tell if ithas been abused inside. An incompetent watchmaker can ruin a finewatch easier than a cheap one. If you do decide to buy, try to getat least a one year warranty. Mechanical watches that are being wornshould be cleaned at least every three years but seldom are. If theyare ultrasonically cleaned without disassembly the recommended periodis 18 months.
VINTAGE WATCHES : $500.00 is a bit low for Rolexes but you should have no troublefinding an Omega or Hamilton. Solid gold cases are most desireable.Last year I bought a gold Hamilton wristwatch (post WW2) for about$200.00 at a NAWCC mart. The price was really good-- I laterdiscovered that the watch should have had a center sweep second handbut didn't because the end of the gear was broken. The watch stillruns fine but it wasn't such a good deal. What people frequently forget is that that even the finest of watches need routine maintenance. In fact, I work on a great number of watches that people assume remain waterproof forever, only to find that the seal had detoriated, and I end up cleaning out a tremendous amount of rust.
VINTAGE WATCHES : As for the sale of wactches, I sell them, but that is not the point of my post. Be cautious around jewelers that sell "restored" vintage watches, because they are often horribly overpriced, and frequently come with no guarantee. Insist that a watch be guaranteed for at least one-year. I extend a warranty of one- year, with the stipulation that the watch is not dropped or taken for a shower. Lastly, I'm quite confident I can help you with the sweep second pinion and subsidiary gear for your Hamilton. Drop me a note with the caliber/grade and I'll let you know what they cost.
