WATCHES HEUER : Well, no. Tag-Heuer's watches, like Rolex's, are automatic (selfwinding). When ever you move, a little eccentric weight spins insidethe watch and winds it for you. Automatic watches are notoriouslyinnacurate. If I had to choose between my $5 digital 8-gagillionfunction digital stopwatch I bought at KMart, or my $500 dollarautomatic wrist watch, I'd choice the $5 quartz stopwatch any day foraccuracy. William F. Buckley had an article on quartz vs. automaticwatches in the August or September issue of National Review. Really,as far as watches go, there is no reason to by an expensive watchexcept for looks or mechanical coolness. In that case, the watchfunctions more as bracelet than as a timepiece. IMHO, Tag-Heuerwatches can look a little on the gaudy side.So...what does TAG do? Is it essentially a free-lance engineering firm(aka Lotus) own, like McLaren and Heuer, by Manseur Ojeh?TAG-Heuer sells both automatic and quartz models of their watches -- theautomatics cost about $100 more than the quartz.
WATCHES HEUER : They're indeed less accurate than quartz watches -- but I wouldn't say thatthey are "notoriously inaccurate." A well-designed and -built automaticwatch can be quite accurate as well -- within seconds a month.An automatic watch can also last a *very* long time. When a quartz watchstops, you toss it out and buy a new one -- there is usually no repairingit. It's utter bollocks!My TAG is not automatic, in fact very few TAGs are automatic. Theyare battery/quartz operated. If I wanted accuracy I'd use a TAGstopwatch. Personaly, I like it because it's waterproof to 200m(not that I plan on usuing it that deep if I can help it!) and ifI get careless when I'm working on my car I can drive over it andthe watch'll be fine (my wrist may hurt a little!)Guess you're looking at the wrong watches, mine looks industrial!No gold, no Gems, purely worklike.BTW The only thing that knacks me off is the fact that you have to send them to Switzerland to get the battery changed (j.dickson) writes:

The ones I saw were ~$1000+,automatic, had bits of gold that caught your eye (kinda like goldstars on Mercedes, blech!), and looked like they would have been wornby men with hairy chests and open collars. Others Heuers were muchmore attractive. All of them were automatic. I have seen batteryoperated Tag-Heuers, but they were at Service Merchandise.No way! IMO the watches are absolutely (for want of a better word) exquisite!Looking at an advert in front of me it says "...end of life battery indication", and as far as I know most of them use batteries.Sheesh - chest wig and gold chain... WATCHES HEUER : I guess you can blame US quality watch dealers for them stocking tackylooking watches. In the UK most TAG-Heuers are stainless or cheaperplastic ones. It's pretty easy to tell which ones are automatic andwhich ones aren't. Automatics have "automatic" printed on the watchface underneath the series number for the watch. About one in 15tend to be automatic. I think the bit about some place called service merchandise is a jokebut it doesn't mean anything to me! Quick guess it's the US equivalentto Camden Market (iffy gear!). I think it's a little unlikely thatWatches of Switzerland and Laings are passing on dodgy gear.Since it came back from the TAG-Heuer factory in one chunk with it's new battery I think it's pretty unlikely it's a fake!If you insist that all TAGs you can get in the States are gold and tacky then I can only assume that the American market is for gold and tacky watches!
